I have been ranking #1 for a relatively low competition niche for a couple years now. This site survived the Zoo Animal updates ....until now...

I couldn't figure out why this would happen, all of a sudden, without any drastic change on my part?

Then, I saw my backlinks. Apparently someone had added my backlink to SEVERAL spammy sites with very high outbound links (essentially link farms) and

Before this, I did not use a lot of backlinks, but the ones I had were high quality and carefully chosen. My main keyword was used on probably 20-25% of these previously, but now it's on a butt load of low quality sites and it's probably 75% of my backlinks.

what to do in this situation? obviously someone with my keyword wanted to knock me off that #1 spot and he was successful in doing so, but is there a way I can report these links and have them not counted towards my link profile?

    Thanks

Google got disallow tool. If you got a lot of links then it might take some time to fix

continue to build high quality links and like the other fellow said use the disavow tool.
