3 domains on different servers and in different niche just dropped 10 - 15 spots... no link building was done the last week so it can't be a Google dance. We have made some onsite seo but that's it..

    Anyone else have noticed something?

Yeah man. I'm in the same niche. I've got 10-15 sites for each one that rose one spot.

~20 sites in different niches, regular volatility on all.

Yes. Several of mine dropped out of the rankings after updating on-page seo, but no back-linking. Not hugely worried as they are in better condition now and will rank better in the future...I hope! Fingers crossed.

In most cases, you should only blame yourself that you didn't do your best to avoid getting into this dreaded situation. But in some cases, you just can't be aware of all the possible scenarios in which your site might lose organic search traffic. But, whenever your site's rankings start dropping, keep calm and start looking for causes and solutions.

First check your Google Web master Tools account. There you'll have notifications from Google regarding manual actions they've taken against your site. Or it may be latest algorithm penalty.

Usually a big drop in rankings happen over-night. If you notice that your site drops more than 10-20 positions on a multitude of keywords, this could indicate a penalty. Be aware - BB.
