As a full time IM'er every day I run into people every single day that are so focused on search engine rankings that they lose site of why we are in this business which is to make money. From time to time I will run a JV or sell a site or something and every time I market it I get 95 out of 100 interested parties that do not like the method because our traffic does not come from search engine rankings. No matter how profitable a method they feel like that if the traffic does not come from rankings it is not a good method.

I think most people think that once a website is ranked well in the search engine they are going to keep making money hand over fist for years to come without doing any work and that is simply not the case. You cant pick a single market where someone is not trying to out rank you every single day. Many of the people I take to just want it automated so they dont have to work but SEO takes a lot of work and cost to do it right. And it is constant work to keep the rankings to keep someone else from taking over your top 5 or top 10 rankings.

Dont get me wrong I love having sites with great rankings and natural traffic but in the 15 years I have done this I have learned that those rankings can sometimes take more time and money to get the rankings and keep them than other methods that will produce more money at the end of day so for those of you that are always out there focused on rankings keep in mind that at end of the day the reason you want those rankings is to make money and there might be cheaper, faster, and easier ways to reach your money goals than to spend endless hours on SEO.

This is so true. I'd rather be nowhere to found in Google, and have a thriving "word of mouth" based business any day, if given the choice. I've asked this before: If you have a good budget, and want more instant results than SEO, why not consider Adwords? Obviously all the different traffic sources have their place, but I think a lot of people tend to forget what they're trying to accomplish with their website, and automatically assume SEO is the only way to go.

On a side note, I'm not sure if your title was intentionally worded like that, but I think it would be make more sense as "There's more to life THAN SEO"

Except a thriving word of mouth business is typically much much harder than ranking in google.

Not disagreeing with OP but SERP ranking is pretty passive once your in. The traffic comes to you. Night and day.

I kind of wish now and then that I had more skills in generating traffic than just mainly SEO... I have some abilities there and know and use some tools but a more broad working knowledge would be good to have so that I could implement and diversify more.

On the other hand, the passive revenue is very nice to have and has served me extremely well over the years so I have nothing to complain about by any means.

    Good point, Bmac.

While you have an excellent point, and diversity in skills is a good thing. SEO and a websites ranking is the
lifeblood of a website in the eyes of most people for good reason.

Although what you said is partially true, if you've a profitable method and unable to find anyone to buy that, then you're not dealing with right people/network. No matter what the people in SEO forums won't be interested in things that are out of their comfort zone and pretty obvious they can't think beyond SEO and rankings.
Perhaps you should reach beyond SEO forums and look in bizop related networks etc because there's a market for every shit as long as they are lucrative.

Yes you are right, about 5 to 8 years ago I was big into flipping sites and I got to where I was always on sitepoint (now flippa) and dp and a few other sites trying to sell sites and was making money but not doing great and then I finally realized that was like trying to sell a horseshoe to a blacksmith so I moved into a marketplace where the buyers didnt have the skills to build sites and started to see a lot better profit margins. And basstracker you are right having skills in both is the best option to see real growth.

This is so true. Its really easy to get hyperfocused on SEO since its a slow process and leaves you alot of time to work on it.
