I am looking at my backlinks and I noticed this.

The sites that have more do follow than no follow ranks very well but the sites that have more no follow than do follow are having a harder time ranking.

    site 1:
    8,000 do follow
    400 no follow

    site 2:
    16,000 do follow
    2,000 no follow

    site 3:
    9000 do follow
    24,000 no follow
(this site has a harder time ranking than the other. All sites are in the same niche)

I understand they dont pass juice but could they also be doing harm? Kinda seems like it.

Hey cosmicsoundz, good to see you around again. Ya know, at first I wanted to say "no way" but I am really having to rethink most my ideas about backlinks and seo in general - some things that used to not be seem to be today.

That's right. No Follow links are not a drawback, I guess.

This means nothing because you do not know how optimized for the keyword they are.

I would think a site with little or no or little no-follow links would seem unnatural..

no follow should not harm your site rankings. I think study should be done for at least 20-30 sites.

A no-follow link does not pass link juice but it contributes in increasing your site's traffic and can make your link building look natural to Google. It is also important to note that a good backlinking technique means creating links with a mix of do-follow and no-follow. There's no exact ratio for this but it's recommend that you should not be trying to acquire every link to your website as a do-follow and make sure that the sites you're acquiring links from are of good quality.

You just need natural mix. For examp. blog comments are nofollow and it is kind of a negative signal.

It might be just a fluke that the site has a harder time ranking. I've seen sites with a mixture of do-follow and no-follow links ranking higher than those with purely do-follow as well. Sometimes it's a crapshoot.

Just get links and rank. When you get one site to rank simply replicate with another site. Paralysis from over analysation.

I find you need at least 10-20% no follow links in your profile. Kind of sticks out like a sore thumb when your link profile is 100% D-Fo

I cant see a site getting penalised for too many no follow links though as I know they are rankable
