    in a dispute with my ISP over usage. Need to phone them back now asap...

    They want to charge me for an over usage on my account of 200GB over a 3 hour period.
    Im on a 5Bit connection so Im trying to explain to them its not possible obviously.

    Problem is im sitting here trying to do the maths and failing!

    I keep getting that it would take 5 hours to download 200GB on a 5Mbit connection which is obviously wrong.

    So in short.
    What is theoretically the shortest time 200GB can be downloaded on a 5Mbit connection (Actual adsl syncrate about 5700)

    5x1024 = 5120
    5120/8 = 640 Kilo Bytes per Second
    640x60 Sec = 38,400 Kilo Bytes downloaded in a minute. ie, 37.5 MB per minute
    37.5x 60 Min = 2,250 MB per Hour ie 2.197 GB per hour.

    To download 200 GB you need 91 hours approx.

    Speed varies sometimes.

    If they say you did that in 2 hrs it would be impossible. Just a rough estimate would tell them as much. Typically you'll get about 1/8th of your rated speed. So if you're on a 5 Mbps line, you're realistically getting like maybe a 600-650 Kb/s download rate. It's just not possible to download 200 gigs of data in 120 minutes no matter how you try and explain it, so I would definitely pursue it if I were you. It would take you around 25 mins to download a single GB, let alone 200, lol. Good luck with it though.

    thank you both. appreciate the quick answer. id got my MB and KB muddled up half way though.

    Theres the proof I didnt download all that in three hours right there.

    edit: @akacash yeah thats what i was trying to explain to them on the phone but they were saying someone was more likely to be using my wifi. I phoned up expecting them to say "oh its just a website glitch their end" not some maths test. Phoning up tomorrow more relaxed and better armed now.
