Lets say i want to write a blog post on Hosting but for a local blog.

So i go to Longtailpro and set it to my country and search for keywords, i get something like this "cheap web hosting" when i click it, i get a competition level of 55 or so which is really high and the top 10 sites aren't from my country.

so how does that work exactly, that means if i write a post on that keyword it would be too hard for targeting LOCAL residents to find it?

You can try it on your content is the best idea.
The competition is 55 make the content more quality than others otherwise choose some images to attract the visitors.
Quality content will give you good results.

If most of the top 10 aren't targeting the exact kw match, then it is STILL possible to break into the top 10. Look into the 2nd page results too. You'll have to actually use Google to check that page. Actually study those top result sites, and plan your own.

There are various important factors to help you break into the top 10... time, keywords, content, onpage seo, offpage seo, HiQ backlinks, targeted traffic, using reddit FB etc., etc being among the most important. Build up the site with related HiQ content. Even the domain name and a good host will greatly help.

Don't expect to see a miracle next day or week. Btw, go for better buyers keywords and try to bank on them. Like: cheap web hosting [countryname] if you're targeting the local market. Use content (reviews, advantages/disadvantages, and comparisons for example) for the local market that will help locals to choose your aff/own product/s. etc, etc, etc...

Add more content pages around your primary content page -- what goes well with your product. Make the site look professional and especially targeted to the locals, and it may help the SE to place your site more appropriately among the giants and others on the 1st page (and who might not have exactly target the particular/exact KW, and are ranking just because google has not found more suitable sites ranking for the exact term).

If you see the LTP, then you might not find any searches done for the [city] part for "cheap web hosting [extended-KW]. Go for the [country] part imo and build upon that. That should give you enough local search quantity [xxxx+ range] to work on.

    Home Page:
Hosting, cheap hosting, cheap web hosting are highly competitive in general. Every beginner wants to rank for those. I suggest targeting main keywords of other hosting niches.

See which other niche-related keywords have high potential to rank as you're targeting the local (country) markets. There is a possibility that the local web hosting companies or even their affiliates haven't used some of the best keywords to their entire potential. There are many factors those guys must have missed. While Google.com and Google UK have become very difficult to rank especially in the web hosting niche, it might not be the case if you are targeting the other countries esp the third world countries and in their local country-specific Google site, e.g. google.co.in. Look especially for buyers keywords in your niche and concentrate on them. Here, even a small local search quantity will help you convert positively because those related buyer KWs may have skipped the attention of your competitors partially or totally... but I would also recommend you to go for general terms and add good and related filler content to your site. Of course, use the Google webmasters tools too. :) Forgot to mention that important factor in ranking in the local Google SE. Use other related SE webmaster tools as well.

If you're using WP, then there are various SEO related plugins which will really help you. Btw, did I mention the importance of using only unique content? lol.

Local SEO is getting more difficult these days. On big sites like MOZ and searchengineland said some factors that you have to improve for achieving ranking locally.

    1. On page SEO should be optimized for local search.
    2. Link signals (i,e) location specific link, Niche specific links.
    3. Nap consisteny & citation.
    4. Reviews and Social signals.
    5. Finally, other advertising like — PPC, offline advertisements..etc.

The keyword I mentioned here was an example, I'm definitely not targeting that.

As for local SEO, I know how to do it... I'm just adding a blog to my business Website and thought i would write some articles looking at keywords with good local searches because I'm targeting only local clients but when I check competition it's sky high and the top ten sites are from other countries not actually mine so kind of hard to find ideas to blog about.
