The more I look into this, I see two ingredients that are common to all of my sites that got hit the worst.

Bear in mind that these are adult sites with good hand-written content, so "content issues" either on the money site or on web 2.0's (which don't exist because they're adult sites) aren't in play here.

    1. Biggest commonality: They all had XR blasts directly to them within the past year, mostly about 9 months ago. (They're all very aged sites, so I considered them "safe."
    2. Second biggest: lack of anchor text diversity. But a few sites that were "XR-free" but still don't have a lot of anchor text diversity did OK.

Conclusion (and it's still early): backlink profiles are definitely a part of Penguin. There are no content issues that could be at play on these sites.

My big question is: is this a timed penalty that will expire (meaning that waiting and link building would be the correct approach), or is it a death penalty (meaning either 301s or abandoning sites)?

301 one of them asap and see what happens. If I had to guess I'd say its a permanent fix so don't sit around waiting for stuff to come roaring back. Try the 301 though. I have seen it work on sites with small traffic. Let us know how it turns out.

    Good luck,
    Con

Reluctant to "give up" on any of them since they're aged and had been top ten sites for eons. Interestingly, traffic hasn't fallen all that much - just clickthroughs. The more I look, the more baffling.

Hmm... I've had my main money site drop from #3 to #6 - now it's #2!
All I did is some bookmarking, so I'm not sure if that helped or not.

Another site of mine was bombed with porn links and dropped from #1 to #10, so unfortunately neg. seo works...
I know who did it, but it looks like they have the money, so getting into pissing war may not be such a good idea.
It is tempting to give my 2 SB's a workout, though...

These are not penalties, but rather algorithm related demotions which are worse b/c you won't improve rankings until you fix what triggered the demotion.

Another text diversity is always a good place to start, besides that, I am not sure where else to look right now.

Anchor text is the only place to go right now - I can't try to dilute the effect of the XR links, because all the sites that are still ranking in these niches have relatively few incoming links and I already have a lot more than they do. Looks like one of those puzzles that might not have an answer.

You're not giving up with a 301. It's just a test. You can actually remove it down the road if you like and the site will revert back to it's normal self. Doesn't sound right I know since a 301 is supposed to be perm but that is how it happens at least in my experience. I saw someone else posting today how the 301 worked for them too. Truth is that 301's are working to rank a lot of sites. Different situation then you have there, but a ton of peeps are ranking for high keywords right now by 301'ing sites with PR to money site. They are blasting the 301'd sites with xrum/SB links. It's working at the moment anyways... good luck.

Don't jump to any conclusions on the fate of your penalized sites so soon. I am still seeing some crazy dancing on a personal site of mine. We need to see where Google finally puts us to make a call on whether or not to abandon the site or continue to forge on.
