The person may have been using that to tamper with the PayPal requests. It can be used to get things free if people use the IPN API and don't have it check the purchase price.
    Contact the buyer.

No balance has a pretty high postive amount.

Actually at around the same time another person ordered the same product and it worked fine. Also when I go to the checkout page which takes me to the actual paypal page it shows me the right price.

The thing is that its not a PayPal loophole. its the site developeres problem. If you are using an automated system, you MUST have the php script check the price, email, business, etc to make sure it is a legit payment.

i understand that, but they're the multibillion dollar company, they should've figured out something by now not to let this happen, it causes headaches not just for the sellers, but for them too, because it requires their support to manually help the seller which is manpower
i mean why this loophole is not present when you pay with a CC for instance? they must have doing something right and paypal doesn't, no?

i reckon they don't even warn the sellers about this, as OP wasn't aware at all

That's right. I only noticed it cause I checked it manually.

I can probably replicate the same results and show you where your weakness is, for a fee of course. I believe this is a vulnerability similiar to what I find when exploiting casinos. Difference being I have no intention of ripping off people doing this type of exploit which is why I have never tried buying something and paying nothing for it. But I believe the underlying principles of it are the same as with my casino exploits, etc...

You sure you don't have Sandbox enabled? I think sandbox processes small amounts like 1 cent like that for tester transactions

more than likely, the amount gives it away
contact paypal support, if you haven't done that already yet, they must be aware of this

not sure what's their policy for cases like this though, because what if the buyer used a hacked/stolen paypal to pay and there are no funds available to cover the sellers losses, will paypal pay from their own pocket?

But it even says right in the code what to do with it and how to do it. But I understand the point you're getting at.

That is not only PayPal problem. You can get same problem with any payment system which redirect user on success URL after payment. You have to check transaction by yourself (manually or via API request) before acceptiong payment for the order!
