I have been a bit confused about this question for a while now. Anyways, today I noticed a blog pop up on page one for a couple keywords for a niche I'm in. So I go to examine the blog and see it showing 23 do follow links on ahrefs, maybe high quality tier 1 links ? I look further and it does not appear so, actually all those links look pretty bad, so the other obvious difference I notice is that he has some social signals. Like 400 facebook likes, and a couple hundred Google+ and tweets.

I created two different landing pages for these keywords to test when ranking them originally, one I basically just spammed, and the other I did a tier build. Both turned out a bit hit or miss for the keyword selection, however the one thing I did not do for these two were social signals to the extent this guy has. Could this be the difference ?

Personally I believe social signals do impact your SERPS.
You may want to take a look at some social signal case studies discussed here.

I think you shouldn't miss social signals. Well not just for SERP (if they at all have an impact in that), but more fore getting visitors from other sources than just Google and Co.

Yes they do impact up to a bit. There is a debate going on this issue right now on this topic and everyone has their own opinions and experiences.

Social signals generate other signals which are important. Social traffic is usually pretty diverse, but if you're able to target it well, like facebook pages with a specific subject, then the signals driven to your site should be good, low bounce rate, etc....

OTOH if you just drive crap social traffic, like from most link aggregators, you will have extremely high bounce rate and low conversion, which isn't gonna help.

I too believe they are good. Take a look at Moz's search engine report. But the other day I saw a big member (Jr exec or higher) who I can't remember the name of stating categorically that they do not help your SERPs. I suspect he was not telling the truth.

Social Signals as in REAL + targeted people / paid social traffic.

Certainly not addmefast junk, since only real people buy things you know.

Well they certainly won't hurt your rankings! I have seen some rather convincing case studies with twitter but I haven't seen anything similar done with the others yet. There is a good chance that Google+ and Facebook likes/shares could help out as well.

In SEO everything matters, but some matter more then others.

So, yes you should include as many different links in your portfolio.

    Good Luck!

The current feeling is that Google gives them increasing importance as a secondary means of validating a site or page has naturally earned authority Since G knows links are easily gamed nowadays, it looks to social likes, tweets and such to establish that the site has gotten "votes" from the web to justify a high ranking.

I think most people will agree that social signals are definitely one piece of the puzzle, but I don't think that one factor alone is making the difference between you and a competitor.

I think it depends on the competition to a point

If you have a site selling products for piles, I mean people aren't really gonna be on Facebook sharing it are they, and that even goes for things like weight loss stuff and wrinkle creams to a point I think

But if you have a travel site, news site, or pet site for example, yeah people will share that stuff, and if your site has no social signals it isn't gonna help you IMO
