If all I want is for Google to think that a few people are bandying about my posts does it matter if I use social signals or social backlinks. I just want to show some social activity so Google won't wonder why I am gaining authority and backlinks but no one is talking about my posts.

I just want a cheap but safe way to do this. (more emphasis on safe than on cheap)

AddMeFast does a good job of getting that for you. Give that a try or perhaps a bot would be more your speed.

I think you're getting your terms confused here.

You have to understand that backlinks from Social Media sources are almost always no good when it comes to SEO, let's just get that out of the way.

Google is insistent that social signals in of themselves don't necessarily mean you will get some sort of added boost when it comes to ranking.

With that out of the way, social signals can still benefit you in a circumstantial kind of way.

When people find your content authoritative and credible, they will talk about you in a wide variety of platforms.

They can blog about you and create backlinks to you or they can talk about you on Social Media, or on forums.

With forums you get a backlink and that can help your SEO footprint.

With Social Media mentions on the other hand, you don't automatically get a boost in your rankings.

However, the mere fact that people are talking about them social media is an indication that there is quite a bit of buzz around your content.

As long as the social mentions are organic then there is a likelihood that this can work in reverse and produce some sort of backlink from a blog or a trusted site.

I hope you see how this all works out.

Simply generating social signals in of themselves is not going to do you much good.

To do this right, I would suggest that you go on Twitter, find authoritative accounts in your niche.

These are people who are proven influence leaders in your niche.

Nine times out of ten, these people have blogs.

    Engage them.

    Share third-party content with them.

Whatever you do, get on their radar and let them understand that you are also an authority.

Once they take you seriously and you start feeding them your content, your relationship with them might reach a point where they would gladly share your content.

Either they themselves would link to you from their blogs or they would share your content with somebody who would.

I hope you see how this all works out from a purely white hat perspective.

Competent and effective Social Media Marketing strategy is definitely worth it, but, it can take some time.

The key here is to quickly identify authoritative people in your niche and get on their radar.

Every now and then I'll go on SEOClerks and order a 800+ social signal blast consisting of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Google+ signals. Those signals are split between *all* of the pages on my site - with instructions to the seller to focus on a particular 5 - 10, depending how many recent posts I have made since I last did it. No clue if this helps or not, but it's only $3, so whatever.

It gets me nothing, zero, nada, zilch in terms of actual traffic. I do it in case Google actually factors in the big social signals into rankings. Again, it's only $3, so whatever.
