I have noticed many social bookmarking websites on Flippa with high traffic stats selling for around $150 - $250. But none of them is already making money can someone tell me what are the issues with buying such a site. Do they really make some money or they are really hard to monetize.

Most of the traffic social bookmarking sites get is from bots. Bots won't click your ads or buy your services. Even the E-mail addresses created from subscribers on these sites are worthless because most people never read the E-mails they receive.

Completely worthless. Don't waste your money!!!

Ya that's what I was thinking. Just wanted to be sure. Thanks for the guidance.

damn...i better flip my pligg site while i still can. you can't even park the damn thing because of what the previous poster said: 'bots don't buy your products' and will result in your account getting banned.

Thats very true indeed. Traffic is not the major factor to be considered while buying a site.

i can think of no reason why those sites would go for $200 for a pligg site, besides the buyer being unaware. I have a pligg site and it is 100% spam.

Rather than just claiming bot traffic lets dig into some numbers to verify our assumption.

A smart scammer would never drop Alexa under 100K. Once you drop under 100K Alexa opens the door for good research. This seller dropped to 30,000 so we have good data to mine.

If you go to due diligence and more info on Alexa you can view the traffic stats and see HUGE fluctuations in traffic. Thousands of visitors one day and then nothing and then thousands. Seriously like a bot is stopping and starting.

Lets do some more digging. Click Search Analytics tab and on left find Search Traffic. 0.5% of traffic for this website is from Search Engines; another sure sign of bot traffic.

Lastly lets look at the Audience tab and scroll to the bottom left of the screen. 74.8% of traffic is from India. Very peculiar seeing how this is a USA directory. 7.3% of the traffic is from Pakistan and 4.4% from the Philippines. The USA traffic comprises 2.4% of this website's traffic. Another sure sign you're looking at a site using bot traffic to drive down Alexa.

We could go deeper but seriously nothing supports real traffic visiting this website. Everything points to a manipulated Alexa.

These directory sites appear on Flippa all the time. I have yet to see a valid one and probably dug into about 20 of them. Most of them aren't even using working scripts, claiming people are paying for premium links with fake PayPal screenshots and bogus order pages.

Most of the traffic on these sites comes from submission bots, I would rather use that money on building some sites and buying some link building services rather than buying these SB/Web directory sites.

As others have said, most of the traffic is bots. The remainder of the traffic is generally from countries that are difficult to monetize... aka india, pakistan, phillipines, etc. Ad agencies generally pay next to nothing for clicks from these countries.
