So back in the day some guys were setting up toll numbers and tricking kids into calling it.

I don't remember seeing any commercials of stuff like this, since I grew up in late 90's/early 00's,so they might have been banned. In only learned about it from watching a nostalgia critic episode.

Seems like the old psychic friends thing where you get people to call and reel them in by charging them crazy amounts of money per minute.

Growing up, my friends and I would prank call the home shopping network. Good times, man.

I remember it very clearly. I was never allowed to call because my parents said it as only "Santa's helper" and not the real Santa :p

Born in mid 80s so it was probably early 90s

That's probably about the time I remember. I live in Canada so it might have lasted a bit longer up here. Not sure

I also remember Miss Cleo the psychic lady haha

That critic is awesome but he means this one http://channelawesome.com/category/videos/channelawesome/dougwalker/nostalgia-critic/

I remember those ads. They stopped working when they introduced stiffer regulation of the 976 prefix. Now operators of these number have to clearly state the per/minute phone charges at the beginning of the call. Also, anyone who calls up their phone company and complains about their phone bill can have the charges reversed.

After working these scams, operators moved onto premium text messages during children shows. I think the current scam is working with in-app purchases for kids games.
