    Techcrunch has some details:

    http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/30/google-plus-one

Seems like it's going to cause a big splash. I'm curious about everyone's thoughts on how to react to the change. Hiring people to click +1's?

im sure google will collect this data to improve their search results. If it works as they have intended we will spend our time writing good content instead of writing bad content and building links the whole day ;)

or we will spend our time creating google profiles and liking our bad content :D

I always wished they had +1 or -1 next to search results so people could up or down results and have some control because in all honesty I'm sick of useless results. Too many shit sites posting the same shit over and over or stuff that has no relevance and I blame half of the people here :p

Would be nice if this is used to factor in results in my opinion, as Kakashi3005 said. Otherwise it's just another button.

There is no true solution to get IMers off the web and off the front pages of SERPS. But this is one way of doing it. This is the next step in getting rid of the splogs, spammier sites and sites that have little content.

This IMO will make it very hard for new competition to come into the SERP and into an already dominated niche, which pretty much sucks, for everyone in general.

Not only the IMers but also real sites that are new that are providing genuine good content because if they add this algo into the SERP, who can say any newcomer can compete with these guys with 1000's of +1's. I know most people on the internet are pretty dumbfounded and most likely will be clicking +1's on lame corporate/mega/authority sites, especially ones that provide little to no content.

Its a bit of a catch22 the way I see it and how Facebook "Likes" has progressed.
Its not really about the content (Viral Videos/Articles are the EXCEPTION). But its about how much traffic the site/video/article ALREADY has. A page that gets 10k visitors a day will obviously get more "Likes" than one that only gets 100 a day.

Stupid, pointless. I don't want others to influence my search results. What's the point of a search engine if I'm customizing it to fit my personal desires. I want to SEARCH for things that I don't know how/where to find ...

im sure google knows that and sees that problem. So maybe they will not count the likes instead they will calculate the likes per 1000 impressions or something like that. That would it even make it harder for us to fake beeing liked^^.

If this does take off and start to influence search results, doesn't that just open itself up to "+1" spam?

Wouldn't it be easier to like your own stuff than to try to find relevant backlinks? Especially long tail or hard to backlink topics.

That's what I'm thinking, playing with it now and only see a way for IMer's to use it to their advantage.

Hmmmm, seems like it could be manipulated fairly easily...The article the OP cites to makes a good point - Google is scared of Facebook.

This is going to get ugly.

I can just see it now, waking up in the morning and Googling my company name to find pages 1 -4 filled with false ripoff reports with 100 or so +1's.

I was wondering why anyone would "+1" something they had not read yet. In the help documentation it states: "Pretty soon, you'll be able to add the +1 button to pages on your site by pasting a snippet of code."

Judging from where this is likely going it could become another tool to leverage, not a roadblock.

So basically I have to plus a site even before I get a chance to read its full content? I would think G00gle is rolling this out in order to make more money(i.e compete with facebook) rather than to give us a better search facility.
If that will be all to it, we will just have to use Top notch contents and write user friendly descriptions.
With quality content and your regular seo, rankings should remain solid since your quality content can only send +1 your way.

We will all see how this turns out. Interesting!
