Unfortunately negative SEO is more potent than ever now thanks to Google's latest changes.

I foresee this as being an increasing problem. IMO the new SEO is going to be create a new clean site, get a few quality links and blast the hell out of any strong competitors on page 1/2 then sit back and wait until you're page 1 until someone comes along and does the same to you, then rinse and repeat. Lovely. :-/

Sadly the answer is no on all counts.

Even if he wasn't using proxies you would need to get the logs from some of the sites he hits and then get his details from his isp(which won't happen)

You would need to spend a fortune in legal costs and I don't know if you'd even have a case for getting a subpoena for the isps to give up his details from his ip. It's not illegal to link to someone's site.

It's not worth trying to pursue them. As BlueTurtle stated, negative SEO is definitely becoming more potent especially after all these updates. Even big time sites are having some pages negative SEO'd and bombing out of the SERPs.

Even if you find out who it is there is not much you can do...

If you really want to find out who has done it you need to look for any type of footprint they have left, use your imagination to find it...

Rather ironic how this will eventually become the new SEO, Google penalizes sites for links that are unnatural or low quality and leave footprints therefore optimizing your site will involve bombing someone elses, and keeping yours as clean as possible. Unfortunately that's what Google is forcing people to do.

I asked this exact same question yesterday and was told by this forum that negative SEO does not work and I should not worry.

The only real way to help the problem from what I have found after being hit was I emailed the top 40 sites stating I knew it was them and if my site received one more link, I would blast the fuck out of all their websites. Stopped after that. Just use a throw away domain so you do not need to read all the angry emails from the other 39 innocent people.

As much as I hate being this way, I too neg SEO my competitor this way. Wiped him off the map. Neg SEO is real and it works 100%.
I did not use porn backlinks, but I did hire a few fiver gigs and blasted adult oriented keywords to his site. That was enough to get rid of him.

Funny thing is with the over optimization penalties you dont even need to be this drastic.. even the tools at google will know no webmaster will blast his top 5 site with adult links. You can accomplish almost the same thing by doing his actual KW and google will see it as manipulation and smack them...

Legal action would be hard, the court wont understand a thing that you are claiming. I guess you can gather the URLs of the links a send a spreadsheet with those to google webmaster team, if you have luck they will believe you.

We are thinking of possible actions, I like the anonymous threat idea someone posted. Email the top 40 and let them know if it happens again, get ready...lol

I am going to try to contact the web site owners, I found that a handful are on godaddy hosting so maybe an email to them too since I have heard they are quick to shut down domains..

I dont know, thinking out loud. Might counter with a bunch of handmade weblogs to diversy the anchor text coming in. Luckily we have made some money with the site and can afford to throw a little money at the problem...

This same thing happened to me recently: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...mbat-negative-search-engine-optimization.html

When did they start blasting your site and how many links was it? My site was #1 and was on page 5 after a month. After Penguin 3 it is now on page 58!! Most other keywords have had at least -500 drops too. Anyone who thinks this stuff isn't real is kidding themselves. My site had a very good link profile prior to the spam attack and it didn't take long for it to drop like a stone after being blasted with 20k links with my main keyword as the anchor.
