I meant to post this earlier in the week and I am amazed that nobody seems to have mentioned it here. If someone has already posted it and you want to point that out then I am sorry that you are wasting your time as I don't care that much.

So it looks like Namecheap had a bit of a bug in their DNS system which allowed a hacker to hijack the DNS of a domain and add their own settings for subdomains. It doesn't look like it was a widespread issue and is fixed now but it is interesting nonetheless.

You can read all about it here

Yeah it's a strange one and I know it is a few days late by now but as Namecheap are a really popular registrar I thought it would be something of interest to others around these parts.

For the record I use them without any issues on plenty of domains

thanks for the information.
i've used Namecheap before and had a pretty good experience with it. but now, even though it's fixed now, the fact that it happened in the first place... not sure if i should still continue or shift my domains somewhere else

Namesilo is about a thousand times better. They even give you a dollar off with the code "bhwdomain"

I moved all my domain from godaddy to namecheap. Might as well move some to namesilo. Never doing any biz with godaddy ever.

Yeah despite the alarming nature of this report it does seem they got it sorted pretty quick and they do have an overall good name.

I am not too worried about any of my domains being registered through them to be honest. If it happens again then it would be scary.
