...when it comes to SEO. I've always done paid advertising so I've never needed to rank well in the search engines.

But now things have changed up for me. I am already in the process of developing a custom ecommerce type website from scratch. This website will have thousands of pages of different products.

The coding is about 50% complete and I expect the launch to be at least a month or two down the road.

    My question is:
I already own the domain the I will be using for the site. It is a brand new name that I registered. Is there anything I can be doing right now to help rank the domain name and get some traffic started? Right now all I have up is a 'coming soon' image page. Should I start building backlinks to the domain name? Any advice to this seo noob would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend to backlink to the main domain until your site is up. But in the mean time you can create your web 2.0 sub pages and keep them backlinking. So when your main site will up and run, you will get a major linkjuice just by linking your sub pages to the money site.

I agree. You don't want to link your main page unless it's up and running.

As autoblogger said, work on your 2.0's and then pyramid them. This way it will be like turning on a water faucet of link juice when your site is ready :D

It's not uncommon to do a pre-luanch page where you capture the email saying something like "Would you like to be notified when we launch?". Put a good teaser or offer something cool. I've signed up for some stuff like this.
