This is captain obvious for most people, but this idea can actually save a few sites for newcomers.

So you just bought an awesome tool and can't wait to use it, you scraped a mountain of links for comments/forums etc and want to try those out.
But what if your technique isn't good enough? what if it penalizes you?
To ensure that this doesn't happen, first try it on some other site which doesn't belong to you at all!!

    1) Go and find a keyword that is similar to your keywords' in global/local searches but in different niche.
    2) Find a site that is in the same position for that keyword as your site is for yours.
    3) treat it like your own site, do quality work on it, and see whether it goes up or down. When you find that your method brings good results, do the same thing on your site. Not only will you save yourself from getting penalized, you will also help someone =)

I still think that the best is to try on your own website.

What if you have a rather established site that rolls in some money and is #7 in google and you want to make it #1?
Some untested method can just kill it for you.

This could also be unfair, what if the work you do affects the site negatively.

Hopefully I never fall victim to your "experiments"

I think it's a waste of money...everything work if you know how to do it...there are 4 main rules to follow...no crap content, mix anchor text, mix platform, good on-site seo!

So many variables involved, it could be good for one 'keyword' and bad for another...

Well, yes it may be unfair against someone. Maybe you can find keyword that people don't really care about much and test on it.
Or maybe get a test site to try stuff on it?
I would still be a bit uncomfortable trying tools for example from BHW section on my site without any testing.

You know, I might just do this. It only costs me some captchas and I get to see if something works.

+rep for simple and effective technique.

Also, this is just the truth. But the ranking report software in my sig can easily track any websites ranking day to day so it is a good tool to use in conjunction with minimal effort.

Problem with this strategy is you have no controls..ie..whose to say the site in question isn't already doing other seo..?
Better to seo a project you have control with .

Many people have their own testing sites, but with many of them impacted by some zoo animal penalty, the next best thing is to use a site of similar design/ranks. Call it unfair, wrong, a waste of money, etc. In the end, it's about ranking sites and smart people test theories before they blast away to their money sites. This is one way to test those theories with a minimal investment.

I like the idea...I personally would just use my own testing sites but it's still a very cheap way for someone to test something.

How many brick and mortar companies would LOVE to be able to test a marketing method elsewhere instead of on their own company? LMAO...I Love this business!

If your site is brand new and the site you experiment on is well-aged, plus already ranking well, your experiment ain't worth shit.

This is kinda unethical, but I guess we're on blackhat threads so I guess it is "ok"? but yes, I agree. You should try it on your own website, it's not fair to fuck up someone else's work just for a case study.

I think this testing makes sense in 'theory' but not really in practice.
Like some users mentioned above, it depends on a lot of factors...

What if that site above your site is much newer than his?
What if his page is much more optimized that yours etc, etc.
