I run a white hat site that does well in the SERPs for its niche. Over the last 6 months a very content-thin site has started to creep up the rankings and out-rank me and other big authoritative sites for certain terms.

I look at this sites backlinks with the usual tools (Majestic, Ahrefs, Moz, etc) and don't see anything special though, nothing that should be causing it to rank to highly (by a long shot). Also, the on-site SEO is nothing special. Like based on what I see it should be back in page 5+, not the top 3 of page 1!

So I've concluded they are using PBNs and the PBNs are blocking crawlers so I can't see them.

Is there anything I can do to see their links and/or compete more effectively with this site?

You could try an obscure link research tool that might not be blocked.

This would be some very deep research, but you could take all the sites going back to pages 5 or 6 (or even further). Run those through Screaming Frog and check for any external links to your competitor's site.

And what will seing those links help you with exactly? The process of outranking it will be absolutely same whether you see or do not see the links. And if they hid them well, you will have hard time uncovering the PBN without some advanced techniques. Focus on what you have been doing, add the PBN links yourself, add more content if possible and wait. You can't make money without spending money. That's how SEO is.

You can't actually find the PBN links Except Some and if they are linking with Naked url.

Search site url on google with Quotes eg: > "siteurlhere"

And yeah, you need more content and quality links to outrank.

    1) link: your competitor domain

    2) search solely competitor URL on Google, for example: www.abc.com

    3) some not-very-popular tools like: similarweb.com, seoprofiler etc.

It sounds like one of my sites, so leave it alone :) you'll never find the links :)

Seriously, build a PBN and do it yourself. White hat stuff is lame and only gets you so far, as you've found out.

It was more to see what this guy was doing, how many PBNS, etc. Curiosity.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have not been able to find them. I will concentrate on my own efforts now!
