Hi! A quick intro - I'm in the middle of making my first affiliate site and haven't yet ranked my keywords in SERPS. I've done my research, got my content together and now I'm starting my back-linking process. Anyway, something caught my eye today whilst analysing my competition again.

When I typed in my keyword, a new result had shot to the top of the page with a featured snippet (the keyword is of the 'best NICHE' type). They didn't appear in the top 10 when I was looking a few days ago. Is it likely there were a lot of new links made? Their links look to be pretty garbage from my understanding. Lots of blog commenting with the link being the same authors name each time for the anchor text (36%), a poorly put together PBN created just for their money site and what appear to be a lot of bought links on public blog networks, as well as probably some GSA/RankerX/RumerX style comments all over the place. Also some 301 redirects from some domains.

I guess my real question is, what caused the leap? Is it the snippet giving it this fresh new number 1 spot or is it lots of new links?

Google seems to be running some tests at the moment.

If the link quality is that bad that for sure they will drop down soon.
Also currently lots of unpredicted things are going in SERPS.

and yes that featured snippet gives a lot of importance I am pretty sure google would be showing result from the table.

Some core updates are going on with google and more over the snippet part, google is considering more on table and li features

I actually noticed that aswell in my "best" keyword. It might be a google update. They are always a pain in the ass most of the time
