Never too long in one place.
So I know Wordpress very well, but now I am going to build a site with 50K posts. Of course I can use caching and tweak it a bit, but is it really doable, or should I jump to another CMS, like Joomla?

Wordpress can hold up to 400k posts after which it will crash. You can use it up to that point.

But i suggest to use either a vps or a dedi, or shared that uses nginx because it's much faster than apache..

    Source?

I think it depends on the server. If your server can handle it, you should be fine.

WP is pretty good choice for you with caching enabled and few more tweaks, in addition good server and php/mysql tunning.. with all these you can do pretty pretty great.

Wordpress can handle a LOT of posts, so you should be fine. It will also depend on how reliable and powerful the server you are on is. Wordpress is probably one of the best options for it, and it'll be easy to manage them all with it's easy to use admin interface.
