I found this site while doing some competitive research for a client, and noticed a HUGE amount of backlinks from edu and gov sites (according to Market Samurai and Yahoo backlink checker). My question is, how did they do this? When I click any of the links I do not see any ads or links anywhere. I am assuming the following:

    1) They bought a cheap or targeted PPC campaign which just focused on edu or gov sites that advertise (perhaps these are but a small handful)
    2) They are on a link exchange of some sort and have ads rotating through (you can see anchor text at bottom of the wildcats page.
    3) They bought straight up text links

Any thoughts how to do the same? It's not comment spamming. Here is the link to the Yahoo Results:

Here is a sample url for one of the edu sites

don't you get penalized for having too many .edu or .gov links though?

Many links from one site may not have good power.

well, they rank #3 in google for the search "junk yard" or "junkyard" and i think that gets like 500k searches per month.
