I bought the site freexboxlivegoldmembership.com from Flippa a week ago and since then the site suddenly lost Google ranking for some major traffic driving keywords. For example for the keywords "free xbox live" and "free xbox live gold" the site went from page 1 to page 40+. As a result, organic traffic dropped by more than 50%.

At first I thought the site was sandboxed or slapped by Google Panda but what confuses me is the fact that it is still on first position for the main keyword "free xbox live gold membership".

I did not do any backlink building since I bought the site and the site has been on page 1 for these keywords for many months until now.

So what else could cause the SERP to drop so rapidly for some keywords but not for others? Should I request a refund from the seller?

Most probably the seller transferred the site too slowly to you.

The time between the transfer can affect the rankings.

Then again, this problem is pretty common in the website buying and selling industry.

I had one buddy experiencing this one too.

Except he was the seller. And no, he did not refund. He can only sympathize and the seller actually doesn't have to refund you because there's no agreement saying the seller should refund the buyer if anything goes wrong.

Good luck man. Hope this piece of info helps.

Let's just hope it's just some unlucky Google Dance happening at the wrong time.

Unforunately the site was not transfered at all. I am using the original hosting which I took over from the seller.

But I'm pretty sure you can get a refund.

Cause... feedbacks are very important in Flippa.

I already gave the seller a positive feedback. :(

However I am not sure if I want to return the site anyway. I still think it has a big potential and I might be able to get those rankings back.

I just want to know what exactly happened so I know whether I have to start building more backlinks or request a ranking reconsideration from google in case the site was unfairly hit by the Panda update.

My site dropped a few weeks back but has started to come back ever so slowly, without doing an awful lot. I had given up on it.

So dont worry, probably just a dance.

    Good pills though!

Something which you should do right away is to get rid of duplicate and low quality content:

    1) Noindex tags, categories, author page and useless pages like privacy policy, contact
    2) Check canonical redirection
    3) Also check for content copier blog and report them to Google with www.google.com/dmca.html

One of my sites came back from the dumps today...its just an update. Google loves to throw things around. If it has been ranked in that position for a long time than don't worry about it, it will be bacl

Curious what the update was. I haven't had a single site drop in ranking, some moved up but nothing major, just a few positions here and there.

Yep - I saw major changes over the weekend as well. Whats funny is I had a website that was in the sandbox for close to 8 months that suddenly regained rankings in a big way. I was ranking on the second and third page for my main keyword and its suddenly jumped up to the 5th spot on the first page!

In regards to your original question though, this does happen when you build out links with over optimization of those anchor texts. For example, one of my sites I have several pages that rank EXTREMELY well. I tried a new backlinking method on two of those pages and they fell off the map for a few weeks. All of my other pages retained the same rankings (those that I didn't linkbuild w/ this method).

Chances are you'll get rankings regained, but to help expedite the time frame I'd recommend building more content and links to those pages. That usually helps get the pages out of the sandbox earlier.
