    Hi there,

one of the sites I work on suddenly lost rankings on 1.11. - basically it doesnt exist in the first 100 SERP results anymore, but when I google specific text like "specific text from my site" or I google the site name I can still see it.

Maybe it was because we didnt add any new content for almost six months or I don't know, but the strange this is, when I'm checking the GWMT and I take a look at the Search Queries section, I can see a huge Impressions spike on 30.10. and then, two days after the impressions are gone - check the enclosed image.

Have anybody ever encountered something like this? Could be some sort of sinister attack from a competition?

    Thanks

EDIT: the quality of the attachment somewhat sucks, so here is an imgur link

I would suspect the spike came from a temporary high ranking, before it dropped off.

So you would suggest some kind of algo-change, or better yet ranking change happened on that date?

Because I have a second site in that same niche (why have competition when you can dominate the market, right?) and when I check the GWMT stats for this other site I can also see a huge drop on 1.11., but this site took on a different course and have better rankings than before that date.

Indeed. It could also be that one or more of your competitors in that niche was playing hard around that time, which would affect everyone's rankings (assuming it's a small niche only)

That looks like it has something to do with your backlink history and google updates.

Check the other site and see if the backlink history is better then the first one, if so, then thats your answer.

BL history shouldn't be the problem, because both sites have more or less the same BL profile. The difference is very small.

BUT this particular site (the one that got hit after 1.11.) has been in trouble before - it was in a deep sandbox circa a year ago and had got out of it only in spring of 2013, so there is a good chance it's still under Google's scope.

So I will revive this thread to tell you what happened.

I created new hand written content with a lot of short and long tail KWs (altogether almost 20,000 words spread on many subpages) and created few new BLs (yeah, should have created more but there wasn't enough time) and the result was as following:

We upload the new content between 10th and 15th December and immediately after the impressions started to rose. They are bit weaker than they have been but I am pretty sure it will be even better because I have a lot of new content in the pipeline and there are some new strong links being created right now. The site is in a very profitable niche so even a few clicks can bring home some decent pesos.

So content, content, content and make sure you frequently update your site!

glad the site is getting back on track. did you check the ips on the day you got very high views - my guess is that google crawled all over the site before it got pushed down.

There was a small spike of crawls on that day when it turned sour (30th October), but I don't think it was something extraordinary. I would say G just got fed up with that site and it's content, becauase, to be honest, it wasn't the best there is. And also the site had other problems in the past due to some hackings...

I can't really answer your question because client (nor do I) doesn't use any ranking checking device apart from manual checks and GWT, but from what I can tell yes, the rankings have recovered although they are still bit sucky.. and will be for a few more months.

Every time I add fresh content to my website I see some increase in activity. Letting your website go stale will kill it.
