I'm ranked #4 for a niche that gets 6k monthly searches. But I only get about 10-15 unique views a day.
Does #1 get all of the traffic?

Make sure you have a catchy title and description. Getting ranked high is only part of the work, you need to get people to click through to your site as well.

#1 gets about 60% of traffic and #4 gets about 4% (based on a study). so you are getting the correct amount of traffic for your position. I would say you should aim for #1 and maybe try and increase your ctr in the serps by changing your title and description.

You probably checked your rankings incorrectly. Use a US proxy to check your rank or you can use serpfox which monitors your ranking (highly recommended). 4th position should get much more than 15 a day, I doubt its because of title and description.

60% thats a pretty misleading case study isn't it?
I'm sure you're only supposed to get around 30%~ for #1. Anyway you're getting the expected amount of traffic. Check your CTR% in Webmastertools and try to Split test with different titles and descriptions to get higher CTR.

Most optimal is getting in top3 minimum.

I have been told it is about 50%, but then again 90% of statistics are made up.

Would make no sense to create fake case studies and statistics as most results for this is retrieved trough Webmaster Tools which shows the average rank + CTR.....

Yes its around 30% for most searches, Brand searches is idd probaly more than 90%.

People on this thread don't seem to know what they're talking about. I'm 100% sure that either you didn't check your rankings correctly or the keyword isn't searched 6000 times a month pm me your website and keyword if you want me to have a look.

    Did you checked the trends?

The keyword's trends may be going downhill.

Mr. Freeze let me try to put this down for you:
OP gets around 10-15 visitors a day. His spot is #4 for an unknown search term which apparently have 6600 searches a month.
His spot is #4 so he should be expecting 5-8% of the traffic. 6600 searches a month is 220 searches a day on average, and with a CTR% of between 5 and 8% he would be getting between 10-15 visitors a day WHICH is the same number as OP states in his thread.

So either non of you have ever ranked a kw in Google, or youre miscalculating badly.

Maybe you're right though. If OP means 10-15 impressions in Google Webmaster tools(And not actually visitors) every day, then the term probaly is only a 300-450 search term ;-) But I doubt this and you're probaly wrong. And I dont like your statement "all of you have no clue" when its actually you who dont have a clue ;-) Lol.

    @THREAD STARTER

Yes theese numbers are normal. Get #1 or rank other terms.

Partly what I thought it might be... first decent answer I heard.

This statistic of 5-8% is bs, most of my sites have that CTR with rank 8-10... And he gets 10-15 unique visits a day, its unlikely that all this will be from the keyword alone. Some of these visitors would be direct visits, other traffic sources and other searched terms.

The #4 spot should get around 6% of the total search volume. Obviously this can vary widely with a number of different factors. Here is a great read on the subject:

    http://training.seobook.com/google-ranking-value

Here is a graph of what they found:

So according to this you should be getting roughly around 13 visitors per day.

    6600 X .06 = 396/30 = 13.2

So you are getting right around what you should be getting.

I have found the best way to increase your CTR is to write eye grabbing titles and descriptions. Adding Google+ Authorship mark up will also really help your CTR. Test, test test!

Woot? Most likely when you rank for example EMD sites for 1 term you get most traffic from ONE source like Google. And even with high ctr% at 10 for 4th spot, the numbers match :D

I dont know which website OP have but from what I understand, he gets his traffic from 1 KW. I don't know if OP have a EMD domain or something equally only targetting 1 KW, but thats what I think...

And with theese small numbers I'm pretty sure he does, and with an "unpopular" website the biggest chance is that there is not much traffic from Direct, Referal or even other related searches.

What he said!.... It used to be called insights for search and gave you a breakdown of what months the keyword was more popular. You won't sell many snow shovels in July nor will you sell too many ice chests in December.

The keyword tool bases the monthly searches on an average for the whole year and a popular keyword for a particular season will appear to be a regularly searched term, even though it is not.

So just make sure you are not targeting a seasonal term when it is out of season or the term is declining in searches due to a better product or better version.

+6 to youssfy for reminding me about that... I wasted alot of time on keywords because of not using that tool.

What is it about the #1 through #3 results (besides position) that makes people want to click to their sites and not yours?

    What is your bounce rate?

#1 spot will get you roughly half of the traffic and spots after that display a huge drop in traffic like maybe ~10%

I ranked #2 for a keyword getting about 550K (global) a month and get about 500 hits a day from it.....

if you aint shooting for #1 then you are shooting blanks.
