My site ranked first page for my keywords about 10 of them all of which were on the first page, mostly number #1, 2. (super micro niche < 100/LMS).
Tonight I checked my rankings for my top keywords and they have dropped about 10 spots to 2nd page.
The site is about 1.5 months old (beginning of July/2012).

I have not done anything but a few manual links on forums where it was relevant.

Should I worry, or is this just a dance that will bounce back...

I would consider it as dance, because you started manual links on forums. When some links get started indexing there would be dance probably.

Wait for few days. If it doesn't move up then go for creating high quality links.

The dance has been quite common recently. Give it a few days, if it continues to drop, time to apply content and get started on creating some high quality links.

    Quality > Quantity.

Unless you start backlinking I don't see why it would recover.

Even if it's just manual high PR blog comments, you should probably do a few a day until you see some rankings return.

Enjoy the dance! Hell, my site was on page 4 for like 10 days and now it's back on page 1 again. Just DON'T STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING or you're going to send G the wrong signal! Be consistent unless the result is the same after a few months. Only then should you rethink your SEO plan.

Same thing here. Few sites dropped a lot, <100. 1 Site dropped all but 1 keyword. 1 site dropped from 1st to 2nd for its main keyword and some for other - long tail traffic is pretty much gone.

Not really sure if this is the time to wait for this "dance" to settle or do something clever.

The Google dance is specifically programmed into the algorithm to catch you out.

They're trying tot rick you into reacting to the movement. If you react and change your linkbuilding then the algo knows you are trying to artificially improve your rankings, if you just continue to do what you're doing then you pass the test.

I know this because of a recent patent now available online which is for this specific mechanic in their algo.

Nothing could be said as of now. I would go and create another site.

If it comes back well and good otherwise you would have another one ready. There is no harm I guess.

    Anyhoo, I think it's a dance.

    Cheers.

i have had the same thing happen with my website ! most keywords dropped 3-6 places on from spots 1/2/3/4/6/7going to ------> 3/5/5/10/11.
I cant recall doing anything mayor on link building! most of these rankings were pure google no backlinks what so ever!

    No way!? You're serious?

That is a really clever idea if it is real, luckily for me I never change my link building but may re-write poor content/add a new page or 2 if my rankings fall.

More on this algo mod here...... http://www.seobythesea.com/2012/08/google-rank-modifying-spammers-patent/

Some of the comments and experiences following the article are very interesting..... If your site is falling and you react in an unexpected way to counter it, then it could be sending a very dangerous signal to the G.
There is little doubt the algo has been tweaked in this way otherwise why file a patent?

Yep looking at my sites, it really does seem that most of them go down before going up. It's very interesting and probably means I should check my rankings less often and never worry about a site going down unless it's been that way for at least a couple of weeks.

    this ^^^^^

that's why you need to stay consistent. resist the urge to panick and change something. only do so after 3 monthe for example and your site still hasn't recovered. don't let google trick you!

"Change Something" is rather obscure.... If a site has dropped a few places then it follows as natural behaviour to add more unique content or dally with the title tags or indeed blast it with half a million scrapebox links.

There is a world of difference between the two. The article I referenced above implies they will be watching for anything. So even doing good WH stuff to your site such as upping the content could mean a penalty.. If I am reading it right?

I thought this might pop up and it is exactly what I thought while making my own post.

This is why i don't trust Google to make the right decisions at all. They make these rules up and put them in the artificial hands of a computer program and expect it to make the correct decisions.

Maybe this is why we see so much collateral damage these days. How can an algo make accurate decisions on a website? Where does it draw the line? What does it specifically look for while processing the Google dance mechanic?

    Questions we just don't know.

I think the rule of thumb is that if you see big movement and suspect a good dance you need to change nothing...which means stay building similar amounts of links.
