Since when did blogspot start requiring a phone number to create an account?

I created a test blog earlier and I didn't get the Phone Verification System(PVS), strange, this is the first time I hear of this, maybe G. is also going to add this on Blogspot as well, besides Gmail...

I think that the phone verification can kick in for all Google sites in the registration process. Be glad that you got a phone verification as it's a lot faster and smoother then the traditional post verification that one also can get, and will get, if failing with the phone verification. The snail-post verification an take weeks before one can open ones account. ;)

Wait, what are you guys talking about? Snail mail validation? What?

A week ago it worked like this:

1) go to blogspot.com
2) sign up
3) click email confirmation
4) start posting

Today it works like this:

1) go to blogspot.com
2) sign up
3) they require a phone number
4) I say "F this" and close my window in frustration

Google normally only require SMS for validation if someone has created a lot of Google based accounts on the IP recently, OR if you are creating accounts with information that doesnt look right, such as trying to create account names with numbers in them (without them prompting you to) or when filling in an address which doesnt match up with the post / zip code.

Thats been my experience at least.

I agree with what Talsin said. I get the SMS verification prompt when I create a bunch of gmail addresses in one day but after a few days go by and I get a new addy I get no problems. Same thing with you tube. I think the same goes with blogspots. Since it's all run by the big G, I imagine that is what is going on.

Not sure whether it's geographically different but here (uk/mainland europe) it's been like that for awhile. Just get yourself a cheap pay as you go sim card and use for all your google accounts.

I wonder if Google also introduce Photo tagging for unlocking your Gmail account too Just like Fakebook did
Or Maybe they will introduce tag your friend email

Yep, it happened to me today too. Yesterday I created a bunch of web 2.0 sites with no problems, but today everything Google related (blogspot, knol, Google sites) required a phone number.

Good, I'm not the only one.
