I kinda don't like how sites are all about branding and niche stuff now. I haver a few sites with a bunch of different topics that I write about, and since those sites don't fall into a specific category they are not considered high quality.

I found this with e-commerce stores especially, the ones that sell a broader range of products tend to rank worse.

It all goes down to G wanting to rank pages that cover the entire subject of the KW, and therefore link out to many pages on that said keyword

Umm... I disagree. You can write about as many topics as you want with great SEO if your site structure is fine.

Instead of one blog with 100 topics, have separate folders for each topic, with breadcrumbs, and a solid site navigation.

Take a business marketing blog for example -- there are a million topics of marketing you can cover, but that doesn't mean all general marketing blogs have bad seo.

It's all about how you set up the site.

You can split your content on the same domain using folders or subdomains if you want to make them niche specific. However, I think you can still rank general topics, as its pages that would count here, the more relevant to searched keywords they are, the better they would rank.
