Many have asked to silo or not to silo (on an established site). And I have been pushing this off for a loooong time now out of fear of what the hell would happen afterwards.

So I'm going to update this thread with details and specifics.

The site use to be an authority site and dominate it's niche. It still get's ok traffic from long tails and review sites but I'll be tracking it's 10 main primaries. It's a low traffic niche but the traffic is worth a lot of money.

I've spent lots of time cleaning up the on page (months ago) but the url structure on the site was as bad as they get. I built this site more than 3 years ago when I didn't know much of anything about marketing or SEO. There was 0 order or organization at all, ridiculously long urls, keywords in the url 3-4 times on many pages.

I have silo'd all primary pages for now. Half of the town pages / long tails are already silo'd the other half aren't (cause they're older). But I want to wait to see what effect silo'n the primary pages has. There were just a few links to the primaries and most if any juice is pointing to the home page. I have access to all the links pointing to the primaries (just a bunch of old web2.0) but I'm not changing the links yet. I think it would look too weird and want to do that slowly.

This is how the site is right now:

Lots of pages are going to deindex / reindex, I expect it to dance like a mofo and I'll update to see where the site lands after it stablizes.

I honestly have no idea what's going to happen all I know is the urls were so overoptimized I'm surprised it was still ranking at all. Results could be bad or good we will have to see. The site has tons of reviews online, and I'm building a PBN for it next week but I just want to see what happens after a major change like this.

Will update when things start dancing.

    UPDATE

Alright folks!!! I meant to update yesterday (1 week mark) but it's been 8 days since the silo was executed. My initial goal was to NOT make any other changes to the site during this time period.

However, I must admit that 5 days after I silo'd I added an EXTREMELY WELL WRITTEN about us page and moved it 2nd in the navigation menu. Yes, I know it sounds very weird that a site this old didn't even have an about us page. But after silo'n it I couldn't stop thinking "this site really needs an about us page".

I spent more than **3 hours** just writing that 1 page. And it's less than 400 words long. But I checked all my competitors about us pages. Noticed they were all weak as hell and figured, "I should really take advantage of this". So I grabbed a bunch of swipe files, got motivated by a few Dan Kennedy sales letters, Gary Halbert, Cashvertising... then wrote the best about us page I've ever written in my life. I've probably reread that page at least 10 times just cause I'm so proud of how well it was done.

    HERE ARE THE RESULTS:

TOTAL SERP INCREASE - 174 positions

But that's not the good news imo. The good news is traffic has only increased roughly 20-30% but call volume has nearly tippled on this site. We're at 13 calls so far this week (only thursday) when 2 weeks ago we were averaging like 4-6 calls a week for this 1 site.

Bottomline is lead volume has increased significantly and once I hit this site with PBN links we're gonna be doing really well (knock on wood). :D

Awesome, thanks for this case study! Goes to show how valuable really low searched terms are worth.

    UPDATE

I forgot I had this thread running so thanks all who bumped it. For those asking if the silo test was stable, I'd say it was "mostly stable". There were a couple keywords that danced, especially the last keyword (my main money keyword) which dropped to page 2 last week then randomly came back up.

Other than that, the Silo Test is over since it's officially been contaminated with PBN links at the 21 day mark.

One weird thing I've noticed is the site seems to be ranking the exact opposite of the last time I backlinked it. Like 2 years ago when I ranked this site it was all the LAST keywords (in Serpbook) that were showing the best improvements first. Now it's most of the first keywords in Serpbook.

I started wondering WHY this is happening (since backlinking JUST started). Then I noticed the way I have my pages ordered now, it's partially reflective of which keywords are ranking the easiest. For example, pages at the top of the menu hierarchy now (which use to be at the bottom), those keywords are now ranking much easier. While the pages that use to be at top, that I now organized at the bottom, those keywords aren't showing as much improvement. Basically, when I made the site I put ALL my most competitive pages highest up in my page hierarchy. All my most profitable pages. Even though it made NO SENSE to have it that way. I didn't care about any natural or logical order. But after silo'n and giving the site a natural and logical order, I had no choice but to put those most competitive pages last in order.

This could be aimless speculation but it does appear that Google is establishing new relevancy on the homepage based on the new order of the menu hierarchy and silo'd pages. Which would make sense. I just really hope this doesn't make it harder to rank for my most competitive keywords. :)

    HERE ARE THE RESULTS:

There have been some very sexy improvements.

And lead volume has increased as well. This last week I collected $3,200 (cash) in commissions for all the jobs we sold. And it also happens to be our 3 year anniversary for the site (me and my brothers biz) which is awesome news.

The PBN right now is only 10 sites big but I have 10 more sites coming and will keep growing it. The first 10 I ordered from hardcorebiker then bought all mid-tier hosting (not cheap shit) and paid a VA to set up everything proper. And when I mean "proper" I mean not a single stone left unturned. These first 10 sites will be the best 10 in my PBN so I've been spending a lot of time doing logos and shit. I also have THOUSANDS of yahoo voice articles that keep coming back 100% unique (I'm using 2 plagiarism checkers). This in an industry that not many marketers go after... or even know about. But it's very profitable and we know from experience that top 3 rankings = lots of $$$. #1 rankings for most our primaries is an easy 7 figures a year (for the business, I'd make 1/3 that amount).

So naturally, having this much content at our disposal is a HUGE advantage. It allows me to focus more on PBN quality, design, footprints, hosting, giving every site a unique voice and personality. Because I KNOW when & if we crack the top 3 again, competitors will get jealous. But when they see where our backlinks are coming from (I'm not blocking any bots) they're gonna be like, "what... the fuck?!"

If people want, I'll continue to update as I use up our next 8 PBN sites. That way I can leave some feedback on hardcores sites. I'm keeping expectations low but I'm still very excited to see what his domains can do. Since the link profiles on those sites are very impressive. Then I'll test other services and reorder based on results and ROI. Keep in mind I'm a **PBN NOOB** and this is my first PBN ever. I've done 3+ months of research, read AlexThePBNDudes entire thread, dozens of other PBN threads and tutorials, youtube videos, have asked tons of questions and spent a decent amount of time and money getting to this stage. Where all the pieces are slowly falling together.

With that said, there's not much left to do but keep the PBN links slowly coming in.

IF THIS WORKS (knock on wood) this will change up the entire game. Hell, it'll change my entire life. Because we have other established local sites in very profitable niches. We are very strong on the conversion / sales / monetization side of things. Our main weakness has always been relying on flash pan / churn & burn public networks. Which helped me buy my current home and pay it in full but never gave us much longevity or stability. So bringing this in house and having full control, privacy, stability, longevity etc won't just get me back up to consistently breaking 5 figure months. This can get me to a level I would have never imagined. Like mid 5 figures / month type shit.

Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself again. 1 day at a time and I will definitely update as things progress. :D

Yes, please continue this journey. I think its very intersting to watch case studies like this. To be honest journey like these are way better education than any method.

    Anyways, couple questions:

What was your backlink profile like before you started this journey?
How much content do you have on the site? Just a guess in post/pages is fine.
And if i understand you correctly, your saying the pages that are first in your menu are the ones moving the quickest? (Using bhw as an example, it would be home, forum then blogs?)

I understand the principles behind siloing but I have a question. Do you change the url structure to heavily linked pages? Let's say you had a page/post "free iPhone app" and you had spent a while creating links to it. The url was something like "www.yoursite.com/free-iphone-app/" . Do you change the url of this page to reflect your siloing? Like "www.yoursite.com/free-stuff/free-iphone-app"?
