I started my first niche site at the end of June ('14) and am anxious to see it start to rank. I did my homework and did careful keyword research with Long Tail Pro and am pretty sure I have a winner. I read an article that says last year it took maybe 2 months to start ranking these types of sites but that now it's more like 4-6 months. I was curious what signs might tell someone that their site will rank. I have lately noticed an influx in spam comments which I never used to get. Is that any indication? I rank OK in Bing and Yahoo for some terms but have no sign of that yet on Google. I have 14 pages of content on good keywords, I've done decent back linking for do follow links. Is there anything to get me over the hump or is it just a waiting game if you know you're doing your SEO correct in the process? Thanks guys!

did you read the google May 14th update? it's taking more time to rank than before, but don't worry, just build more sites and not too much links.

Good point - basically I've gotten a base of blog comments in my niche of around 30. I have found resources for do-follow profile links of maybe about 6. I've also used a few other sites of mine to create links in posts over to the new site. The old sites aren't very good and were failed attempts at getting commissions for an auto-stock trader that I bought a couple years ago. Also a few directories like logo submissions and general business directories like about and crunch base type of sites. Having typed all that I'm sure that's not "decent" by your or anyone else's standards, but I really don't want to waste time with anymore no-follow links. Step 2 is after a couple more content pieces I will create a resources page to link out to similar non-competition resources and see if I can get a conversation going and maybe a link back in a similar fashion. If I am missing any other areas at this stage please let me know. - Thanks for your question.

Each website behaves differently in Google so there's no particular sign that denotes the readiness of Google to rank a site. However, when the site starts going up without you doing anything or building additional links, that could be an indication that it's ready for the limelight.
