So if I am signed into Google, I see my site on page 3. As soon as I sign out, if I do the same search again, I am number #2 on page 1.

Can anyone provide some insight into why this would be the case? Not sure what to make of that.

Google tries to personalize the search results by tracking what do you generally search and which links you click most. This is the result of that.

Same is true for your adsense ads. If you have clicked some kind of ad (health magazine for e.g.) previously and then you visited a page which has nothing to do with health magazine (bikes for e.g.), google will try to search ads for bikes and if it doesn't have ads for bikes, it will show you health magazine ads.

when you are signed in google will give you the results based of your previous searches.
when you are signed out it will give you results that are not bias to where or who you are
in research alway sign out of google or you will get wrong results

you do have options on both to turn off your searching being tracked so it doesnt alter where you rank. But just remember this. Even if you have this turned off. Where you rank is affected by which server you connect to. As different google servers runs slightly different formulas for rankings
