Sick of the suit & tie job! I want freedom!

Hey BHW!

I'm a recent Finance major from Canada! Although I do enjoy finance, I'm sick of the typical 9 - 5 job and office setting. One of my goals in life is to be free! I want to work whenever and wherever I want. That is my dream from a macro perspective.

My experience with IM is absolutely ZERO! I honestly never created a website before, nor do I have any programming skills. I know that the next couple of years will be a challenge, but that's okay because I love to hustle and get results. Right now I'm learning HTML, CSS, and PHP from Codeacademy and I absolutely love it! It's so interesting how lines of code create applications that could provide value to people throughout the world. Talk about inspiring!

Anyway, my current project is to get familiar with building basic websites using wordpress themes. I have an idea to build a authority website consisting of blog posts, product reviews, and having a forum to maintain a loyal visitor/customer base. I'm trying a variety of free themes right now, therefore if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. Also, if anyone has any examples of successful websites that contain affiliate products, or even just well designed websites in general, please let me know.

My goal for BHW is gain enough experience and knowledge so that I can give back to this awesome community. I hope nothing but the best for all of you, and let's continue to live our dream!

Learning HTML, CSS, and PHP from Codeacademy is good and all but it takes very little knowledge of what you mentioned to make money online, heck I bet half of the people here on bhw don't know how to do all that, even myself I only know very basic html which I naturally learned a couple of years ago but you really need to know how to market to make money online find a technique that works for you. Once you learn how to do that then your income is only limited to the amount of work you put in each day.

Knowing how to create website using HTML/CSS is not necessary to be able to create a website. Now days there a tons of free CMS scripts and free templates. Personally I know some very successful people that are making a lot of money online, and they don't know even one line in HTML. Knowing HTML/CSS and PHP should help you a lot in future, but as I said it's not crucial.

Welcome to BHW. There are many different instructional videos that shows you how to build different wordpress sites. Showed my Dad some and he started with zero knowledge and now has several different wordpress sites. Just use big 'g' search and invest non distracted time.

Several of us dropped the suit and tie to do this for a living. Welcome and good luck on your journey.

It is a more laid life style but the pressure and head ache is a million times more, because this is your hard work and if you screw up it feels like a slap in the face. But once you finally find a rythm (and you will find it ) it will be worth every single minute of hard work you put in.

Make sure the free themes you use are from Wordpress and not some random "free wordpress theme" site. They can contain unwanted code. As for learning HTML, CSS and PHP, basic knowledge is probably going to help. I don't know about anyone else here, but I've built sites using the aforementioned languages for years and when I started using Wordpress, I got totally lost! I didn't know where anything was to make changes. (C'mon, all I want to do is pad this margin a little more and took me nearly an hour to figure out what the file name, div name and css class etc. was.) Going straight to wordpress may be quicker. IMHO

Read , read and read. Then implement. Don't be that fool who read but don't take action.

My advice:

I like Blogger over Wordpress. I actually hate Wordpress, though I have a site that runs on it.

If you have a job and make decent money, save up cash or if you have cash, buy a site off Flippa for $5k or $10k to get started. Do your research, half the sites on there are trash, but if you pay more you'll get better quality.

Get an Adsense account and Clickbank account. Adsense is easier at first, Clickbank is harder but better long term. If you can get a stream of Clickbank sales coming in, you've made it, in my opinion. I love CB.

Another thing. You want a small "nut". My bills are $350 a month. Get all that shit pared down.
