It seems everybody goes out and buys old domains to start a new project.

I am looking to start some money sites and some blogs, should I buy all older domains?

I have always just bought new domains but as I read it seems other guys buy all old domains.

I like starting my money sites with all new domains. But that's mainly because I like the challenge of building brand websites using my own domain names instead of someone's sloppy seconds.

Some projects require a brand new domain, and there's nothing wrong with that. In a race from 0 to 10 though if you can start at 1 or 2 or 3 there's nothing wrong with that either.

If you want to use expired domain as your money site, you should consider checking the quality of the backlinks, clean and relevant anchor profile and the history of the domain.

I've recently bought a few expired domains for PBNs but used a few for money sites - yeah the name is completely unrelated to the niches, but there are loads of brand names that mean jack shit.

However, they struggle to rank - and by that I mean I'm stuck on page 2 for most keywords - they're fairly easy/medium competition and with the firepower I've given them + the aged links that were on the domain before, it should be rocking the niche. I suppose it shows that previously made sites and their backlinks - even though most are naked anchors (no spam, all checked), should remain in that industry so niche/keyword relevant aged/expired domains will be best...although very tricky to find.

That's not to say they won't ever rank but I'm just surprised as I'm ranking much more difficult keywords using similar strategies on new domains. I guess it's either Google messing around with the index like they have for the past 5 months as well, meta changes take forever to update - indexers nowadays are useless. If it takes longer then so be it, it's just frustrating in the mean time.

If you do it right you can rank new domains just as easily as old domains.

Depends on the domain. I sometimes buy expired domains... depends on the quality of the backlinks. But the fact people buy older domains are not only based on that of course. However, I'm still experiencing that some good new domains with a value name in it rank faster than old domains with good backlinks.. those are mostly local domains with a city or something in it.

Buying an expired domain gets you a head start in getting link juice. Add a 301 redirect from another expired domain and you should start seeing results.

I buy new domains and yes it takes longer to rank, but I am not in a rush. Eventually it will be positioned first.
