Should you continue building links once you reach 1st page on google?

So lets say you are on first page of google and you are happy with your position do you stop building links or do you continue to drip feed them.

I think if you stop then you would eventually lose ranking but not sure. Also it may be a red flag if you are getting links and all of a sudden people stop talking about your site...

Any thoughts on this ?
 
You always find new competitors, If you're ranking #1 on a profitable keyword then build up other sites to dominate other positions too.

Concerning the link building, It depends on other competitors, If they're weak then I won't continue link building to this article.
 
You need to maintain rankings, don't rest on your laurels.
Fresh content too is another must.
 
Yes, of course you would want to continue building links. You always want to stay one or two steps ahead of competitors.
 
Well, first page and #1 are a huge difference in traffic. Don't stop at first page. If you reached the top, there is no need to force it, but keep building a few quality links steadily.
