Does anyone have any opinions, insight, myths, research, whatever about buying traffic. If you create a new website, get a few backlinks, and buy about 100 visitors a day for...3 months, would that be a good idea?

I'd rather do the keyword research for 1 week than to buy the traffic.
Paid traffic will not last longer

I mean to get the site started. The whole conundrum you get visitors and backlinks from traffic but you get traffic from visitors and backlinks.

What if you buy small amounts of traffic dispersed over time, just speeding up the natural growth process

Depends on what kind of paid traffic it is. If you are talking about bulk traffic, no, if you are talking about buying niched traffic gigs from twitter and what not, maybe.

PPC is also another option, but you damn well better know the exact conversion rate of your site.

I guess it all depends on what you mean by buying traffic. Google advertising seems to work for many. Would it work for you? You have to experiment. As for buying traffic that doesn't describe where or why the traffic is going to show up at your site, that's not going to do you any good. I looked at your website. You have a pretty cool topic. Why don't you ask your readers what content they want to see on the website and then provide it? For example, why not conduct some interviews with people who have learned English and ask them questions about the process they went through? In that case, you are producing original content that may be useful to your members. Or maybe interview experts in the field of learning English....new techniques, approaches, etc. Book authors...etc..
Google advertising has credibility. Look at their annual earnings. If someone else is providing something similar, maybe it will work. If someone is offering to send raw traffic, I think that will be useless.
