So I am fairly new to SEO and I'm sorta getting the hang of it. Managed to get a few sites to some good positions and even # 1 .

My question tho is once my site is # 1 should i just stop building links or keep going with the second tier or what ? :D

keep building, you competitors are always building links so if you stop it will be easer for them to catch up with you.

I would let it rest for a bit. If it isn't broke then don't fix it.
Keep an eye on your rankings and if they begin to slip then continue link building.

I would keep building links, but slower. Once you see a drop in ranking, build more links again

Keep building them, it's what would happen to a site naturally.

Keep building so you remain at the top but not to many because you dont want big G slapping you

If you continue to build more, you may end up with too many, and get slapped across the ass. Many people may enjoy that, but I'm sure you wouldn't. ;)

On the other hand, stopping may end up screwing you over equally as much.

In the end, both may or may not get you where you want. Experiment, and continue from there. That's all any of us can really do.

There's no definite answer to that. Completely depends on your competition and how fast your competitors are gaining authority and social engagement.
Just don't build them too many.

Yes, you must keep building links but a bit Slower Now.

If You are On Top, You can Keep Building High Quality Links as maintenance of Rankings.

Yep, you must keep building backlinks, it's a process which never ends.

In a very competitive niche, one of my sites which I havent built any links to in 2 months moves up 1 or 2 spots on page 1 slowly,

It is very situational, my guess is, the backlinks I built are from socially active sites that constantly receive news, comments and strong article posts so it self-sustains.

Cool, well i guess ill keep it to 1 or 2 HQ link per week maybe and then go more with second tier :)

Seems like an opportune time to be much more selective with your link building.

my website is not at the top, yet i don't build links. maybe i need to take SEO training. sounds funny, i'm starting into this.

Google likes consistency. I wouldn't bother with an aggressive link-building campaign but at least maintain a natural link profile where you are acquiring a fair amount of links each month.

if you are on top and getting decent visits, - you may also get some natural links, this might not be enough tho.
If you stop building all together - it will look not natural say the least.

i would build them but slower and would concentrate on high quality only.

Definitely keep building, but once you're on top for some words that will free up your time to put some more focus on long tail keywords and new variations. Continue to build the links, but branch out to become more diverse and bring in more traffic from a variety of sources.

Continue building links, but at a slower pace just to maintain your velocity. You could lose existing links that are helping you rank and if you fail to replace them in time, you will be gone.
