I have a blog that has dozens of posts and each post is aimed at a specific keyword/s, normally I would build backlinks to the specific blog/site post to rank it, but in this case each of these keywords are really low searches. So I think it would not be worth it to specifically build backlinks to each and every post individually but instead build all my backlinks to the homepage including all the anchor texts for each post, so that then maybe ALL the posts will start ranking. Is this how I should do this ? Never really built backlinks mostly to the homepage before for a scenario link this.

If you want to rank inner pages, you need to backlink inner pages. Spread links all around, and yes hitting your homepage with anchored links will help relevance for all topics especially general, but if you want to rank longtails on the inner urls, you need to promote them, just like every other url you want to push up the SERPs. If they're super low comp they'll rank just based on the url/title/tags and site authority..... but nothing worth pursuing is ever that low comp IMO unless very very niche specific, and then you've found yourself a little gem :)

The good news is, if the keywords are not too competitive you'll only need a little link building to get them going.

I thought that backlinking the homepage would increase the authority of the site, so that when I add new pages/posts they will automatically rank by themselves without maybe even having to backlink the inner page, is that how it works or am I wrong?

Yes that's part of it. The posts or pages that don't rank on page 1 will need links to them as well. Start with social shares and go from there.

I would still spread the links out between your pages and targeted keywords. Not only does it look more natural, but it will also give your website more authority across the domain. Instead of just one page being thick, a well rounded site will do better against future competition..
