I have my sites like this:

    Site1 with 1000 backlinks
Site1 was redirected to Site2 last year
Site2 was recently redirected to Site3

Do I have to renew the Site1 and Site2 domain if I want site3 to continue ranking? As said before Site1 has the backlinks. Site2 and now Site3 have 0 backlinks (only the ones that were redirected from Site1).

Well think about it, if it isn't redirected anymore, the value isn't passed, so answer = yes.

Is it worth being wrong for the cost of a renewal???

Well it's a 301 redirect. Permanent redirect means to me that once indexed it's there permanently and cannot be changed. I think if site1 redirects to site2 and it's permanent I cannot just change it to site3. I tested it in the past and only the first redirect worked.

You are probably right. The thing is I am doing a lot of redirects. In a few years I will have too many domains to renew :)
