Should I rank root or subdirectory?

    Hey guys,
So I have a web site based around 'web services'. I have the main domain which gives an overview of it all, and then Ive made subdirectories for the various sub services, eg:
    rootdomain.tld/web_hosting/
    rootdomain.tld/web_design/

Now, back in the day, I always used to do all my backlinking efforts to the main domain. However, more recently I was told that I should rather do backlinking efforts to my subdirectories to build authority (something google likes). I just wanted everyones opinion here?

Should I fight to now rank the subdirectories or should I not bother and just carry on with the root domain?
Im currently #8 for the main root, and #57 for the subdirectory...

    Thanks :)

Creating deeplinks will also benefit your top level. Having deeplinks as well as links to your tld will benefit your site more than having only deeplinks or only links to your top level.

You should use sub directories rather than sub domains it's better in my experience.

Also you don't just want to build links to your main domain name you should build links to other pages too.
