So what should I be pinging? The domain name as is, or the rss.xml file that's associated with my site? What works better in getting my stuff indexed?

Jus' wonderin'

I would like to know also. I heard about DIGG'n your site then Pining it so yeah im all ears.

You should ping your domain and make sure your robots.txt has

Sitemap: http://www.domain.com/sitemap.xml.gz

Digg would work for getting your site indexed, but it's a nofollow link so I wouldn't count on it for SERP boost.

I usually ping my domain and have a link to new articles from there...if that is not possible I would ping the full url of the article. There is also a link tag in my homepage that points to the rss feed
Code:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Blog Posts RSS Feed" href="http://yourdomain.com/feed" />

I usually just ping the domain, sometimes i dont even ping :P. I havent tested it full so i cant be sure, but i think that tweeting a new page may get you indexed fast. Maybe if you tweet it with a trending tweet as we all know that google bot loves anything that is trending on google/twitter.

I dont know if this is the best way but I normally ping the sites where I have good backlinks. I have heard pinging your sites too often is not good and hence i refrain from doing it.
Pinging sites linking to your site does give me a boost in traffic for a few days.
Let me know what you people think about this..

You mean BOT/SPIDER kind of traffic right ? :D

Pinging is usually meant to say that a new page/post is up or an existing page/post is updated. I usually ping my angela's list backlinks and get a quick rise in rankings within a few days later. It's not instantaneous but it works!
