Should I pay for advertising on a site ($13 CPM) for my photo business?

Im trying to get my photo business off the ground here in LA. I specialize in actor head shots. There is a site for actors (www*backstage*com) that gets 1.2 million uniques per month and they want to charge $12 (CPM) for a half page side banner. My minimum to get in would be $200, that's rent money for me at this point. But, if I get two clients from it, it makes sense to keep going. Should I do it?

If all you have is $200 and that's your rent money, I wouldn't risk it.

You shouldn't ever risk money you can't afford to lose.

Whats your current conversion rate? (i.e. if 100 people visit your site and 2 buy, its 2%) ...

If you guess a 1% CTR on the ad (typically low given the targeted nature) and a 2% conversion rate, your 200 dollars would buy 15 x $13 CPM = 15k impressions = 150 clicks, = 3 conversions.

Of course, nice ads will get better CTR and better squeeze pages will get high conversions. You could easily do a break-point analysis and find out what CTR you need for a given conversion rate.

I'd say negotiate the minimum to 100 if you can and give it a go. $100 may only give you 1 conversion, or none, but you can wet your feet and also it's getting you brand awareness which will be worth while in the long run =]

Not necessarily, this is only hypothetical.

OP, if you look at some of the threads that people posted on media buys, many people buy much more than just 15K impressions and get barely any clicks at all let alone conversions.

If I remember right, I think a user called "Wasted" posts a lot of threads on media buy and how to do it and whatnot, you should probably check it out before you go any further.

Thanks for the advice guys. Agreed that I shouldn't risk money at this point, but I will read up on the media buy thread to learn for when I'm ready.

Why not just try Google Adwords, it's more likely to convert I think and you could probably reach an even more targeted audience at a cheaper price.
