I have always wondered about this but really have not found a concrete answer yet. Some websites like facebook fan pages have the page in https when viewing it in a browser, but does that mean when I build backlinks I should point to https instead of http? Or does it not really matter?

Here is a quick one for you:

    http: is regular unsecured link

    https: is a secure link

so depending if you are sending people to an application for example that has a SSL certificate use: https

if you are linking to a reg blog or website use: http

    hope that helps :)

https is used when you (the webmaster) purchases a SSL Cert, through your (the webmasters) hosting company, or from another company. This is normally done by webmasters, when they want to offer products for sale on their website. This (https) makes the connection SECURE and makes the consumer more comfortable, with making the transaction.

if you're going to link to a site using it, the yes that'll be just fine. there's no harm in doing so!

    thanks

There won't be big difference, You can either use http or https to point and create backlinks. When the security certificate expires it transfer back to http.
