I've noticed I deindexed my category pages months ago and left it as it is.
Should I index them? Been reading mixed thoughts about it.

bro it depends if the category of your website are "Keywords" it will be better to rank /index them otherwise if they are just useless words like "action / full / new / latest " etc categories then its not worth

Do these pages have custom content? Or are they auto generated and/or thin content ones? If thin content/auto-generated, don't index them.

    Okay let me explain.
Let's say my blog is about Mercedes cars.
My categories are: Engine, Interior, Tires, blah blah blah. All my posts are under a specific category, not a single post is uncategorized. The category pages contain only the posts inside (still nothing written as a description, prolly should have done that by now)

Categories gives juice to posts but you should optimize them (give them a meta title and description). Be sure to make them as unique as you can otherwise it could be tagged as duplicate content

I've read somewhere that indexing your category pages can be seen by google as duplicate content. I don't even know why lol. Where's the duplicate content?!

I see nothing wrong with indexing category pages. Just install a plugin to remove the category slug (I don't remember the name, search for it). After you install it, it will change yourwebsite.com/category/engine to yourwebsite.com/engine

oh nothing as a description ? you should add meta_description & meta_tags to provide some boost in SEO rankings to your pages. like if your category is Mercedes then add description about engine of it. it will give a little power

Well there is a small chance for google to see it as duplicate but better be safe than sorry.

A lot of websites can use the same category as you and the text on the page might be similar too so therefore duplicate!

I don't think they're referring to that, I will surely not use the same text lol. I think they're referring as a duplicate content inside your own blog maybe.

I honestly think Google loves them. It is the only thing that Google indexed without effort on my wordpress.com web 2.0 when it was first created

I'm pretty sure I did a big mistake messing with noindex with category pages. I will reindex them, but first I will add some meta tag and description to them so they won't be classified as thin content

There are mixed reaction when it comes to category pages. Some SEO gurus would recommend deindexing or blocking that from listing, as it promotes duplicate content. But then, some of these category does rank fairly well under certain circumstances. I think some SEO plugins already have some pre-defined rules on listing the category section - those should work fairly well for your site.

If you website has less than 100 pages no need to index the category pages
but you can try, it depends of your website topic too

Because I have a mixed blog (not a small niche), I want google to really understand my categories so I can rank for each of them. This is the main reason I am thinking to index them.
