I have a site that sells access to a paid member's area. I have been researching my competitors lately and have noticed that most, if not all have a ton of "articles" on the site that have their own page, like randomsite.com/my-keyword-article. My site isn't like this, only about 10 pages, not including the backend. I bought the site a few months ago and am still a noob at most things. The site makes a fair amount of sales through PPC and some organic traffic right now, but I know the site has a lot more potential with better SERPs. So I'm thinking this is a good idea for me to do as well... make a bunch of articles rich with my keywords, giving each it's own page with the keyword in the url. If there is anything I should need to know about doing this, please let me know. It's sounds like it would be a good thing to me but I just want to make sure before I jump into it... I could POTENTIALLY make hundreds, if not thousands of pages if I wanted to based on my keywords.

Also, how should I place the articles on the site? For example, should I have them all visible, in an "article" section? Or should I keep them hidden, with no links to them from the rest of the site?

Any other input you can give me on this would be much appreciated.

Good idea as more content and more pages will give more link juice to your homepage.
Your 2nd ideas about keeping them visible or not. I would keep them hidden because you do not want to distribute link juice from your home page to pages your not trying to rank. Think of it as a pyramid. All your sites pages on the bottom pushing link juice up to your main/home page.

if you can host keyword rich articles that are not published elsewhere then heck yeah! But if the content is duplicate content then it is worthless!

Exactly. That was going to be my next question, how to get a ton of articles up without spending a fortune. What would be the best way for me to do this? I don't have the time or patience to write hundreds of articles and I can't afford to pay someone to write hundreds of articles either. I could pay to have articles spun and that would be cheaper, but there probably won't be articles for many of the keywords and even if there was one for each keyword, finding an article for each and every keyword would take forever on it's own. I guess just start small and build over time.

Is there any automated way to quickly find articles on multiple keywords? Or, would I be ok to copy my competitor's articles and spin those? That would be the quickest way to get them, but I don't want to cause any problems with my competitors either.

Well, I downloaded spinnerchief, and was able to find some articles elsewhere on my keywords which i spun and made 4 pages to add to my site so far. Pretty easy and quick now that I am getting the hang of it.

But, I was wondering how will I know that I have spun the articles enough so that google does not consider them duplicate content? I am spinning every 3rd word using the "orderly use the thesaurus" option. Should I ping these pages after I upload them so google can find them?

Use SpinnerChief's similarity check. It's the ONLY software that has this tool and it's indispensible if you're going to publish multiple spun versions of the same article.

Wouldn't you ruin your website/blog with spun articles as they will usually be almost unreadable? Or do you post them and remove them after a while?

Thanks, but what level of similarity am I looking for? I have never spun an article in my life until last night. Can someone link me to some good resources on the proper way to spin articles?

I have no idea. I hope not!

    Bump to the top...

Can't anyone tell more more about spinning?

Should I ping these pages after uploading them to my site?

What level of similarity am I looking for to avoid being seen as duplicate content in the eyes of google?

Am I safe to copy my competitors articles and spin those?

Should I put links to my home page within the article or does this not matter since I already have links to all of the pages of the site at the top already?

Would it be ok to put some images in the article so I can stuff the ALT tags?
