Should I have 2 seperate websites or combine them??

Long time lurker first time poster. I hope this is the right place to post this, don't know where else this would go.

Let's say I want to make 1 fmylife type website and 1 website with articles that will have a similar theme (say both the sites are about finance, fitness, etc)

Is it optimal to make 2 different sites or sublink/combine the two into 1 big site? Like main article site and fmltypewebsite.mainarticlesite.com??

Traffic wise it may be better to combine them since the websites go hand in hand. But if I want to make the fml type website a brand would being a sublink hurt it? I do have the domain for the fmy type website and could either have the site there or just forward it to the sublink of the other site...

well, if they both target the same keywords i would make 2 since you have a better chance of occupying more than 1 spot in the SERPS. Like more than one site showing in google search results.
