Should I focus on getting the top slot of Google Places to change my life?

Hey guys. Right now I'm stuck working a 9-5 job (YAY!, I know) and my father, who owns a roofing business, has asked me if I could get him leads from the internet.

He's proposing that if I could get him leads for his business I could go and work for him and get a commission from every job he sells. I'd be part of his business getting him leads from online, and he'd take care of the work (with his crews).

Now the only thing I can think of that can get me a steady supply of leads is Google Places.

Obviously there's Adwords, but I don't have a budget yet to do it right. Although it's something I might do once more money starts coming my way.

Anyway my question for people out there who have businesses offline is; is a top slot in Google Places a good sources of leads/calls everyday? If it is, which I assume but I'm asking in case it isn't for some people, then with the commissions I could potentially make that will literally change my life for the better. My current job, $10 /hour in the US, isn't cutting it, and I feel like my dad is giving me an opportunity to help him while helping me in the process.

Any advice in general with Google Places or heck even local SEO? I know I need citations and reviews and that's something I'm working on right now. My dad's business listing in Google Places isn't ranking on the top for the keyword and city, but I'm trying right now.

I get about a call a day for a roofing/exterior remodeling site I do lead gen for. One of the terms we rank for is "cityname roof replacement" and this one alone gets a couple calls a week. What kind of commission is your dad going to give?

About 10% from every job. He mostly does repairs though which would fetch me between $100 and $150 per job completed. Do you use Google Places for lead gen or do you stick to local SEO?

classified sites might be good for this too.

That's a good idea.

I recall trying that before but I gave up when my ad was drowned by the constant reposting of ads my competitors made. Is there a way I can post my ads more often without getting ghosted by the site or flagged by competitors (I'm doubtful of the latter)?

Nice man. Google Places = Local SEO for the most part.

But yes I also do regular organic and 7 box ranking as well.

If you need citations hit me up :D
