If I'm doing SEO on one of my sites should I bother targeting really high searched keywords that have already been targeted by other SEO people?

Yes. Well, If you can make it a main category like. If you are targetting "balls in new york, "big bath balls", "bath ball installation"

I would go target the big main keyword "balls" and make that the category page....

mysite.com/balls <----- that page targets the main keyword

mysite.com/balls/big-bath-balls <--- targets the long tails...

You'd be surprised at how many long tail and weird searches you can get ranked for.....

But I set mine up...so the category page has an article about the main keyword and then links to all the sub categories which are the long tails...

    TARGET EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN......

Siloing structure helps a lot in this.... And gives a LOT of room for your "niche" site to become an "authority" site.
