I have been working as an seo/ppc consultant for several years now, and my dream is to make a living as a seo/ppc freelancer (selling seo/ppc services to businesses). But I read everywhere about business owners getting a lot of sales calls from seo companies every day. So I feel that I'm to late in the game, and it will be extremely difficult to be able to make it.

So I would really like to hear your thoughts about it, what do you think?

    Your advice are much appreciated.

I don't believe you. You won't be asking this question if you were working in this industry for several years.

You're looking for reasons to not make it... Go out there, fail, and make adjustments. That's business.

In any industry there wont be any thing such as late or early, there is always a room that you could get big.
Just make your service some thing special or unique.
Only thing you have to make them believe is that why they have to take
your service when there are 1000s of SEO/PPC providers.

If you're good at SEO, you'll do your own sites, and cash in from the results.

Or - randomly pick a local business, build a new site for them, rank it top 3, then call them and tell them they can either buy it from you ($2k?) or rent it ($400/mth?) :) If they don't want it, change the name on the site to another business, and rinse and repeat...

Yes, yes yes... it's probably not legal to use their logo or their name, but hey - let them sue you :) As long as you take it offline if you're told to, then you're all good.

Stare with one customer on the side, then keep finding them. When you make more side money than job money, quit and start your own business.

If you are good at what you do and have expert knowledge then it is not too late.

One word for you : SPECIALISATION

Rather than market yourself to everybody as a general SEO/PPC expert, do some research and find a couple of professions/niches and learn as much as you can about their requirements. Then target those markets as a specialist.

This will make your market smaller and more targeted but this means you might become the go-to guy in those industries.

From my opinion, it is not TOO late :) probably, i think you are afraid of something that wont let you to break your fear.

If you are thinking, you are late then why you are wasting your time by gathering your past things. Try to get clients, if anything does not works. register a domain, do seo by yourself, get traffic, get paid by affiliated ad networks like google adsense, yahoo, bing... if you make a successful magazine site you would get more than $700 per month. if you own 3-4 sites with great traffic, then you wont seek for seo clients. :bird:

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is NOW.

Looking back at 2008, 2009 or basically any year you could have said exactly the same thing. Think about if you get started now, in 2 years you will be fucking glad you did.

For all we know - you may as well live in some city where the SEO services aren't that common and your competition may be little or none.

Well - the chances are you are not living in such kind of city. But think about the things in a different way. Almost in every niche there is competition. And if you don't have some great innovative idea - better think of one right now. Or start a job. Or do something else. You are a free person.

But let's be honest - SEO/PPC and internet marketing as a whole is one of the few industries in which you need small investment to start. I mean - I guess you have a computer, you maybe have internet access too, you know how to type and read. And those are the instruments of your trade.

The next thing is to find clients. But guess what - all SEO companies need to do the same. If there is a SEO company which doesn't welcome the possibility of new clients - well, I don't know of it yet.

So you are on par with everybody else in this industry. Yes, some have portfolios. Well, you can do without one. If you have - great.

But let's don't go too much off topic. I don't think it's too late to start in SEO business.

    Best regards,
    Axeny
