Should I Backlink my MainPage or my Articles?

I have a website (whitehat) with many articles on it. My competition is huge, lots of authority sites that rank for competitive keywords varying from 3 million searches a month to 10k, which most of my competition ranks first page for. I never intended to rank for the 3 mil keys right away, rather start with small 10k keys. However, I recently decided it might be better to backlink articles individually and to give mainpage linking a lower priority for the moment.

When one of my competitors writes a new article, it will rank first page right away, because of the autority that they have. For instance, when they write an article named "Jon Stewart stars in movie", they rank for it straight away, just like newspaper sites (which some of 'em practically are). When I announce the same news on my site, even after a load of quality, relevant, high PR backlinks, it does not rank. I am now experimenting with heavy backlinking of one article (no popular keys at all), to see how well that goes.

    Now for my question:

Should I keep on backlinking articles individually until they rank well? Or should I spend time backlinking the mainpage so my articles will eventually rank themselves higher?
Keep in mind that i mostly write (niche) news articles that usually only get searches for a short time. Highest volume on 'the day after', fading out over the course of 1 to 2 weeks. After that, it is too specific for that time and hardly relevant anymore.

    Would love to hear.

Well, I know you're looking for a definitive answer on either Bl your articles of money site... But personally I would do both.

Article sites have a lot of authority so content from them is indexed extremely quickly and is ranked the same. Backlinking your article will increase the juice flowing from the links to your main site, making those links worth more.

However, more links to your money site is also needed so you can rank for those specific keywords you're targeting.

Maybe outsource half the work so you focus on backlinking your money site and have someone else do a web 2.0 or xrumer blast to your articles.

Definitely both. It will help your site gain more authority if you do both. I always link everything on my site and I can typically outrank people with less links.

This is the correct answer. When building backlinks, you need to be backlinking EVERYTHING on your site. The more links google sees, the more they trust your site. Which is more important? Both have equal importance, so split time equally. You don't need to spend a full day backlinking 1 article, just throw a few at it, then move on to the next article.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful.

I certainly have a clearer idea on what to do now. My main problem was that backlinking my mainpage was a struggle without any direct results (competition mostly old and strong auth sites). Then went to backlink articles with the same result (though more human visitors, which is good too). I guess the keywords that I'm targeting and the competition is a little more than I originally accounted for, but that is my own fault.

Think I will go with the following:

    • Backlink main site through keyword optimized articles, forum posts, status updates, (micro)blogging etc.
    • Backlink time bound articles through all of the above in a lesser extend, news sites (Press Release sites) and I might try some link bait and viral if I can.
    • Backlink non-time bound articles more excessively, until I hit first page on these little keywords. Note that these keys are not competitive at all.

Does that sound right to you? Did I miss something?

That all sounds about right, especially this. I am glad to see you understand the difference here. If something is "time bound" you need to jump on it as soon as you can, and you can usually secure a good ranking with VERY minimal backlinking. But if something is like a general article like "Lose Weight" you have all the time in the world to link to it, so just throw some links on here and there.

Over time, google will give you the recognition you deserve. That is how authority sites get their authority. They just keep it up, over and over, and eventually google says YES, you are an elite authority on many subjects, if we index you first, you will be given a top ranking.
