Shooting for the Moon - My Journey to Riches

Hello! This is another one of them "my journey" threads. I've not set a specific target like £10/day, £100/day, £1000/day as they are my milestones, not goals. My goal is the moon. I'm happy making a comfortable living, but I'd also like to support my family for the future, but all told, I want riches. I want to be able to do what I want, when I want. No more renting, borrowing money, working a job for someone else and generally being a slave to society.

Why start a journey thread? Well, I suppose having it down publicly (rather than in a private WP blog) will sort of spur me on a bit. It's also nice to be able to share my thoughts with a load of like-minded people. And when I've made my monies, I'll have a log of what I did, on the forum where I learned it all from. It also might be useful to others, and I'll probably post links to questions I've asked and services I've bought here at BHW.

Pretty much 6 months ago, I set up my first "proper" website (apart from the few random sites I've had over the years) with a view to make money. I've been reading here for quite a while (I did have a different username here for the past few months, but I had to abandon it as I stupidly used one that I use everywhere else - very very traceable).

So this website's been making me between £0.60 and £3.00 per day from ~200 views p/day. Not much, but I did pick a rubbish niche, but that's all organic traffic from Google, with no back-linking (well less than 5 blog comments at the start when I didn't know better). It's something I'm very interested in the long run, as I did my final year university project on it (it's a piece of technology), but it's a pants CPC and not much (advert) competition. It also requires me to do a lot of technical articles, which will require images and videos personally made by me, which is a bit time consuming. This site's sort of on the backburner for the moment, but when I get a load of time will be very lucrative (but not via AdSense).

    The New Site

Sooooo! I've started on another site! This one started off as me aiming for a MNS, but I combined a few keywords and am going for 1 large niche. I'm aiming for long tails in the articles rather than being #1 for a ridiculous keyword, and social virility in the articles. Luckily the articles for this niche don't require much more than words and a bit of thought.

I've brought the missus on board for content writing. She's got a degree in creative writing (handy or what!?) and the first lot of articles have been done at a rate of 4 per hour. They have been pretty much re-writes of PLRs etc., but as it's a niche she's very interested in, she's been adding her own bits and the articles are pretty awesome. :p

I've set the site live, and am editing the theme as I go along. I've put up 10 articles, and have the rest scheduled for 1 per day (I back-dated the 10 articles to appear like they were posted once a day). At the moment I've just grabbed some images off Google image search, but will buy some stock photography when we have a nice amount of articles and a trickle of traffic (don't want to get fooked now from copyright! Also just edited robots.txt as I realised they would be searchable!)

I've registered the name with Facebook and Twitter and set up auto post to them. I've set up a Google+ page for it, and a YouTube page linked to that. I've also set up a Pinterest business profile, but I don't have a f***ing clue what to do with it (but I heard it's good for rich middle aged women, which fits my niche nicely ;)).

The plan for now is to just add an article every day (or more if she creates too many and it ends up too far in the future), and get the site's design and structure up to the standard I want. I'm having the articles auto-post to social sites, but I have no followers yet - just get some activity out there. The articles aren't particularly keyword researched, they are just there to fill the site at the minute. Specific keyword articles will come down the line, as will optimising highly viewed pages. I have a handful of optimised articles from when I was doing MNS research that are in there too.

When we have some activity on the site, that's when monetisation comes in... AdSense, CPA, Affiliates, as many different sources as I can. I had a long think about the site's niche, and as it's not aimed at tech-savvy young people, I'm gonna have more chance that they won't have adblocker installed and will be willing to click affiliate links and fill out surveys.

Anyway, this is getting looooong now, and there's no option to hide a threadsaver, so I'm gonna stop wasting time here and get back to making the site. Bop!

EDIT: OK, so I'm gonna be gay and structure my post with sub-headings. OCD much? Or been writing too many articles?

Very nice to see you have someone supporting you in your ventures and helping you to write articles instead of nagging about
time on the PC which is so common. Having a creative writer on your side will definitely help out and save you from spending hours
or money on good English articles.

    Wish you the best Bluehatface!

Subscribed to this thread. I am about 3 weeks ahead of you on my site, but I am in the same position of you. More of a tight niche, but it can be for everyone - young and old.

I'll keep updated on your progress and maybe update you on my progress with some ideas if they are working for me.

    Best of luck!

    Thanks for the support!

Thanks MadStacks. Yeah I'm pretty lucky, but I suppose it's a favour as I'm producing her album when we get the boat fixed!

Awesome, good luck with your journey. Yeah, feel free to let us know any sneaky tips you find. I'll be posting pretty much everything I do here.

    Update 1 - November

I meant to do this update at the start of the month, but didn't get round to it! I'll probably just do a monthly update from now on.

So this month's AdSense was better than the month before. Can't complain with that, I've not really done much on site A.

I've been working on this new site now for the past few weeks. Mrs BlueHatFace has been busy rewriting some content for the site. We've got around 30 posts on the site, with a few published in the future, and a few reserved for some web 2.0s. I've created a Squidoo lens and a wordpress blog with a single article. Gonna let them settle a bit, edit and add more content before adding my links. I've also created a pretty funky logo for it, and created a wordpress plugin that will edit my titles into title case.

I've put the SNAP plugin on to auto-post to Facebook and Twitter. I might buy the upgrade at some point to get G+ and Pinterest, although I've been doing Pinterest manually. When we have about 50 live articles, we'll go back though them all, and start cross linking relevant posts together, and maybe dotting around a couple of Amazon links. The posts have just literally been thrown up to get some content, and to look like there's some proper activity on the site.

I've not put any monetisation onto the site yet as there's no traffic. I've been looking into getting a few real Facebook likes and twitter followers for the site. I think I've decided on my Facebook likes ($8 for 500 likes, just to get the ball rolling), and am waiting for the PM back with details how to pay. Not really looked at Twitter followers services yet.

I've also just bought ScrapeBox - I'm going to have a play at some ranking and banking and various other goodies!!

    Update 2 - December

Well I've not done a lot at all with IM this month. The boat is still broke, got a new nephew, and come back to the parents for Christmas, so it's all been sidelined a bit. I have however been getting into creating PHP scripts (and wordpress themes). I am quite proficient in C/C++, but I've been learning PHP.

I've successfully created a image / status updater for Facebook with spinning and loads of goodies! I've set up a couple of Facebook pages and let my PHP script schedule 100's of images to post at intervals in the future (My hosting doesn't let me do proper cron jobs, so I just run the script via Xampp, and create a load of scheduled posts - which is a bit temperamental. Need to get a better server).

I've also created a scraper to scrape images from Reddit, and a couple of meme sites for putting into the above Facebook poster. A few weeks back, I created an article scraper in C++, but had some problems as I couldn't get the cURL library working properly. Some sites block after a few attempts as I can't rotate proxies, and a couple of sites don't work as I can't set user agents. I'll have one last go at getting the cURL library to work before porting it to PHP. I have all the parsing code worked out, it's just the HTML grabbing...

    Back to IM...

My original site went from PR N/A to PR2 in the update. Not too shabby as I haven't done any real link building.

Changing the Adsense to Text only and adding a below post ad changed by CTR from 1.87% to 2.01%. CPC is £0.24 both months. The ads aren't intrusive at all, and it's a very techy blog so Adblock is quite prevalent.

I've set up traffic travis to track some of my keywords. I'm ranked #2 for a "should I buy" type article keyword which has 170 monthly searches (but I rank top 3 for multiple variations of the keyword which add up to >1000 :))

I'm #3 for another article with 4,400 monthly searches which is another "should I buy" type post.

But my favourite is I'm ranked #34 for a keyword with 60,000 monthly searches, and TT gives it a "moderately difficult" difficult rating. Since the PR update this has gone from >#100 and continues rising. I need to get some high quality BLs to it (it's actually a category).

I'm a bit short of cash at the moment so I've been learning Christmas songs on the accordion to go busking in Manchester for the next couple of weeks. Once I've made a bit of money busking I'm going to buy some xmas presents, and bank the rest to upgrade my server, get some private proxies for scrapebox spam backlinks, get some FB likes for my auto-posting pages to get the ball rolling, and maybe buy a service from here or two.

The new site I set up a couple of months ago has had nothing done to it. I need to make a lot more content, get some on-site and off-site SEO done to it and maybe focus the efforts a little bit. It's quite a broad niche.

    Update 3 - January

Happy new year! Not done much at all in December. It's all sucked a bit.

Mrs. BHF and me have had a couple of gigs around keeping us busy jamming, and we've been doing the obligatory travels around seeing family for Christmas. All this means we've not had much time for getting work done at all, and the money we made from gigs got spent on the ridiculously expensive (for the service) National Rail.

Couple this with the fact both of our laptops died makes it all a bit shit. Plus the boat is still broke so no power (not been back to it for a couple of weeks either so it might be sunk or not even there!)

So the new website has just sat doing nothing - no articles, no backlinks.

My original site isn't doing too bad though, Getting around 300 UV a day. In December, I made no backlinks, 1 good 1000 word tutorial article, and 4 filler ~200 word articles. Nothing at all really.

From this site I made £78 from AdSense, and $100 from US Amazon affiliates (with a few still to be shipped). Today's USD->GBP converts to a total of £138.

In keeping with all the other journey threads, this is £4.45 a day.

    Monthy Profit....
    £138 ($228)
    £4.45 ($7.37) per day

As these posts are quite long, I'm going to create a checklist of things to do, and then check if I did them next month instead of the rambles above. I then have a measurable plan for the month....

    Looking Forward...
    • Get boat fixed with busking money to get back power, and my powerhouse PC (instead of this donated laptop with a mighty 512MB RAM and the "T" key missing).
    • Create custom plugin for WP for creating an Amazon Affiliate store (Non of the others are quite what I want) and launch the store (In my niche from the earning site - a proven unsaturated niche).
    • Create some tutorials for my music site from years ago which used to make money before I abandoned it. And record Mrs. BHF's new album.
    • Create content, content, content, and when I have some $$$, get my little brother to write me some content for more £/hour than he's on a McDonalds.
    • Create some quality Web 2.0s for backlink / BN purposes.

Thanks guys - a little motivation goes a long way!

    Update 3.5 - Mid January

Just wrote a shitload of stuff here and my phone had a paddy and lost my long, detailed post. (I'm at the library and using my phone internet as the WiFi here blocks BHW as it's a 'hacking' site. lol)

    Summary...

    • Posted a Reddit post - got ~2000 upvotes and ~6000 UVs to my undeveloped site. Quickly whipped AdSense up and made a few quid before the mods deleted it (unfairly IMO). Unfortunately that was the only post I had that matched that subreddit. I'm either going to have to write another, or maybe just re-post it?
    • Pinned all my posts to pinterest boards - boards have same same as category on website - got an immediate re-pin (no idea how to get more)

    Update 4 - February

Boom! Got power back on the boat a week ago! Spent the past couple of weeks sorting things out in the real world so back to IM proper...

I've got a few sites going on so I'll have to code-name them to keep track...
    1. First 'proper' site for making money - Codename: Tech
    2. Second site that Mrs. BHF wrote content for - Codename: Health
    3. Site I've just made - Codename: Tool
    4. My original / personal music site - Codename: Personal

    Stuff done since last update...

    • Created new website (yesterday). It's an online tool based on a generator I've been working on for a while; quite useful for SEOers etc. :p Will post it when it's a bit more polished and matured. Don't want some NSEO or idea stolen or have it botted as soon as it's launched.
      • Good opportunities for affiliate monies (signed up to Commission Junction) and in the future paid options.
      • Got it with namecheap with WHOIS privacy.
      • Created FB, twitter G+, YT accounts and added GA and GWMT
      • Released 3 Press releases (same PR on 3 different sites)
      • Created everything independent, no footprint back to me, and perfect for selling in the future (I've been sloppy in the past).
    • Created a load of web 2.0s with content ripped from article sites & spun with a free online spinner. I wanted to test Google's indexing of shite spun content. When I set my PC back up (using a Lubunu laptop ATM), I'll get some proxies and blast some SB blog comments at them to see what happens.
    • Posted a couple of articles to my existing sites.
    • Bought a link from a link directory for my health site... Link is on PR5 page, Domain is PR7 and has 73 OBL. $9.

    Looking Forward...
    • Carry on as normal with other sites - great content, social traffic etc.
    • Build some links to my new tool and polish up. Add affiliate links.
    • Finish up my FB bot and get content posted to FB pages.
    • Get SB up and running and do some scraping.

    Monthy Profit...
    £116.20 ($190.68)
    £3.74 ($6.15) per day
Down from last month - AdSense £61.65, Amazon $89.52

    Update 4.5

Decided to make a churn and burn site to get my head around a 'proper' blackhat site.

I've found a keyword. 6.6k exact US searches relating to a product. It also has a high CPC, although I'm not sure I want adsense on it. I have a load of other related KWs to target on the site.

I've lined up some Amazon products to promote on the site, uncapped, at 6%. Me and Mrs. BlueHatFace will write the content.

I'm going to get some cheap services from here to rank it.

Not including time, it will cost about £10-£20. Hopefully make £100 at least. Selling 2 products at $1000 is all we need!
