He didn't get caught. He was framed.
Some of the eBay executives encouraged him to meet their own internal affiliate sales targets.

Yep always worthwhile to do a Cost-Benefit Analysis before committing any Criminal act.

He must remain on three years' probation after that, and was fined $US25,000.

For the amount of money involved he must be laughing.

I think I read somewhere that it was actually the FBI that encouraged Ebay to target him.
He was probably grassed up to the FBI by another affiliate jealous of his success or that the method wasn't shared with him.

I am not condoning what he did but that sort of money would tempt many of us.
